Show of hands II. Buying an evo or sti after subaru's press release. Post thoughts.
If you're smart you'll wait a year to buy an Evo. You'll get more of the goodies if sales are good. I'm sure they will put out an STI fighter w/ all the electronics if all the STI gets sold. Either case, let the battle begin between the 2 manufacturers, in the end, we the consumer is going to win. Any case, I'm leaning towards the STI(of course I am a current subaru owner). The new EVO is fugly compared to the VII and no ACD or YAC. Also, don't forget, Subaru has had the 2.5T engines running in Japan, so it is a tested and proven engine, oh yeah, 6 speed baby! I'll have to wait for the pricing announcements for the STI though. Hopefully it's in the low $30K.
You would totally be able to feel a front LSD every time you make a hard turn-in, and gas it. You will be able to feel both wheels giving you power, your front end will feel more balanced. The first thing im doing to my EVO is buyin some CUSCO gear. The trannies in the EVO will have TRIPLE Synchro's in first and second!!!!!!!
Ive heard so many horror stories on iclub and clubwrx about people that shred their second gear. The trannies in the EVO should be excellent when compared to the piece of **** SOA released with the WRX. It has the same tranny as the Forester I believe. WTF is up with that? In my WRX second gear is hit or miss. It takes Puuuuuurfect clutch release, and if ya dont get it, ya get a nice clunk. Makes ya feel good inside too!
anyway
LONG LIVE THE FRONT MOUNT!

Subaru owner here. Haven't been on this board since I registered back when it started. Just wanted to say what's up and you should all stay in line for your EVO's. Wouldn't want the Subaru dealers to start gouging us bad if the demand increases.
Besides you've got the star vehicle of The Fast and the Furious 2.
I'd actually like to thank you guys. If it wasn't for
scaring Subaru with it's EVO we defidently wouldn't be getting a 2.5. Should be a good rivalry when the tuners start playing around with both cars. Even if you are down half a liter and only powering 3 wheels.
Just playin around, see ya on the road.
Oh, and you guys have some good smileys over here.

Um, hrgm, the WRX 5 speed sucks, the STi 6 speed is damn near bullet proof. Keep that in mind.

, are you taking notes? What were you thing giving us an open diff for the front
How should we say this in asia. We're losing face to subaru.
I still can't get over the 2.5L in the STi.....Subaru really went all out!
Matched to that 6-speed, that thing is going to be really sick!
..hell,,,,the STi will even come with a lightweight rear window for reduced weight. At least someone knows how to listen to the enthusiast

yeah subaru did go all out w/ the 2.5. i wonder if the japanese people are pissed? personally, i've always like evos more but subaru got smart and brought the wrx first. after seeing the evo @ the la auto show, thats all i was thinking about. the only negative thing i could ever say about it is the interior. it is a lot worse than my wrx- and thats ghetto already!and damn, the sti specs are insane... but who really cares about stock specs really? almost everyone is gonna mod their cars. i honestly don't believe the sti is going to be that much crazier than a evo... but i want both. i need to go rob a bank or something... who's down?
Interesting little FYI...
I know it may change with the American version, but the STi has always been lighter weight than the Evo (not including the goofy limited editions both sides produced).
The last production STi has a weight of 3153 lbs. That's with the 6-speed and DCCD. I have no clue what the new engine will weigh, but since Subaru's going so far as to get rid of the radio (ballsy move for the North American "spoiled rotten" market), I'd say they've done some serious weight reduction.

The engine won't add any significant weight. All EJ series blocks have the same exterior dimensions. Also, not that it matters since they both weight the same, but we don't even know if it's based off the EJ25 or EJ20 block. It could be an EJ25 block made semi-closed, or an already semi-closed EJ20 STI block bored/stroked to 2.5.
Having just driven an imported Evo VII yesterday I can only hope that the US market car is similar. What a fantastic car out of the box. We put the stock EVO on our AWD dyno and it made 217WHP on 91 Octane gas, and then 230WHP on 94 Octane gas. That is with a Dyno Dynamics Dyno from Australia which reads approx 15% lower than a Dynojet. To put that in perspective:
My Stock 1997 GSX did 144 WHP
The stock WRX makes 158WHP
The car is obviously happier with real(94) gas in the tank as it was pinging with the 91.
Now on to the STI.Holy cow!!!
Subaru of America just slapped Mitsubishi upside the head with the anouncement on Monday. The car has ALL of the JDM stuff AND 500cc's more!
No replacement for displacement and not to mention the stronger 6 speed, driver controlled diff, Brembos etc all for $32,000. Very nice. I hope
steps up to the plate next year and counters with the real EVO that I just drove and brings it undiluted. Then that would be a tougher choice as I beleive the EVO is a better drivers car as sold in Japan than the STI. Also as others have mentioned the 4G63 is a great platform( unless you are an idiot like me and have a US built 2gen with CRANKWALK!!
) to build a ton of power with. But at the end of the day it is still only 2.0 liters and not 2.5 liters. We are testing our new 2.4 stroker Subaru motor shortly which already has dynoed at 800 horsepower safely, according to our engine builder. I can't wait to see what we can wring out of the bigger motor as we have already made 500 horsepower on a stock 2.0 liter WRX motor. Great time to be a car enthusiast, but for the time being Subaru will be getting my business.
