radar scanners P*ss me off...
x50 is rated the best detector to buy, its rated #1.. it works great for k and ka which all cops around here used i thought.... 1st time in 5 years of owning scanners that i got lasered.... I think im going to get a jammer... Or just not speed in the city i got the ticket since i know they upgraded to laser
I love my X50, around here I've been hit with laser once and I was happily obeying the speed limit. Ka however is 99% of what they use around here so the X50 works awesome for that. Nothing is going to help you against laser as what everyone else says, it's instant on, no way for the radar detector to pick up something that isn't there.
I'm with most people here probably. First, if you speed, you're taking a risk (aren't we all?) Second, not much you can do against an "instant on" unless you have a jammer of some kind. I have a detector, but I rarely go a LOT faster than traffic...and when I do, I just hope I don't run across a cop. But yea, mainly I got it for the guys that sit on the side of the road, or overpasses, just clocking people...I've been snagged by them before, and decided to avoid it, which the radar detector helps with.
Has anyone tried the Blinder M20 or M40 Laser Jammer? I have read that it blanks the cops up gun from any distance. It also is also alerts you to laser. By the way never use any of the Rocky Mountian Jammers everything I have read on them is they are junk. I am thinking about trying out the Blinder myself.
I have never been hit with laser. I have the Passport 8500, about 1.5 years old. If I found that laser began to be a problem, Passport sells a laser jammer that is compatible with the Passport 8500. I read somewhere that it works well for jamming laser. The laser beam that is shot out is very narrow and hard to pick up with any detectors. From all the tests, no detector picks up laser very well unless it is shot right in the line of sight on the detectors laser sensor.
The 8500 is blistering in X, K, and KA band though. It amazes me how far it picks up sometimes.

detectors are basically useless... even if they are using radar or laser, it will only tell you when the radar is in use... cops are trained to turn it on and off. that way its no on steady and you can't tell they have it on. just my opinion. but what ever, maybe people use it just to "feel" better idk. don't mean to start and arguement or anything.
Radar detectors work because radar is a sound wave. There will always be stray reflections, espescially with higher bands of Radar (Ka). They are designed to give the cop more range and will give you more warning. The gun does have to be active though. Laser detectors are the dumbest product on the market. They are only good as a "pull over if your going to fast detector". Light travels much faster and dissipates quickly. Laser has to be used stationary in a "speed Trap" and has to be at a much closer range. By the time the electronics in a detector are triggered the gun is putting up your speed. Since Laser is a beam of light and invisible, It doesn't violate any law to broadcast the same wavelegth yourself. Laser jammers are just transimtting the same light wavelegth all the time to confuse the gun. Soon they'll change the light wavelength on Laser to combat jammers just like they have done with radar systems.
Development of laser was funded by Geico insurance. If they sell in your state, they donated guns to the LEO's. Otherwise municipalities will buy radar guns. They are almost half the cost and still write them plenty of tickets.

Had a radar detector once, got so annoying because it used to pick up ambulances and even signals I still do not know. I would have to slow down every 2 min, got annoying. Now i just wait for a dumass to come flying by and I just follow him, hes shakes the bushes and I rake the leaves!
The X50 works great. Nothing will save you from instant on radar or laser if the cop points it right at you though. Detectors work by picking up signals in the area, from where the cop is shooting other cars ahead or behind. Many cops do still leave their radars on all the time too, basically announcing their presence to the X50.
Laser is tough because it does not bounce around like radar does, so you get less warning that it's in use. Generally if your laser warning goes off then you or someone very close to you has just been busted.

I have a radar detector, but I only use it while commuting in my Galant. If I get caught doing what I do in my Eclipse, no detector is going to save me. I only use it when I know I'm going through areas where they tend to set traps, like around school zones or unusually low speed arears where I might be out in left field listening to a good beat and tagged for something ghey like doing 35 in a 15 non school or hospital zone. But you can't just expect to turn one on and turn of your brain likes its some invisible shield protecting you. You gotta be on top of your game and keep your eyes open. I got my first and only speeding ticket when I was 18 and ten years of controlled high speed driving later, I haven't been caught.
NO laser jammers are not illegal. They run on the light spectrum which isn't controlled by the FCC. But a cop will figure out soon enough that you are using a jammer if you don't turn it off. He may then be inclined to bust you for something else.
