How can that be? I've seen the dynosheets of stock EVOs and they are pretty damned smooth already..... Maybe they can be modified for more power or different A/Fs or what have you, but to make them smoother it means they have to be originally very rough, right?.....

I'd love to see some dynosheets comparing the A/F and power/tq curves of stock cars versus mail order reflashed (any flash, not just Al's) cars and see how they compare as far as "smoothness" is concerned.

No worries, I was not quoting you as saying that stuff..... I don't mind claims of more power, more boost, higher rev limits, etc. It's just all this hyperbole and undefineable "improvements" that I don't like to hear about. Also, while it's true that these cars can be modified to make lots more power and perhaps to handle better, it's never without a cost. Usually a pretty big cost both in money spent on the mods themselves and their consequences as well as in driveability, reliability, etc. I think it's great to modify these cars and it's a lot of fun to do it. Also, the power gains can be very dramatic and highly rewarding.

OTOH, the glory of a few seconds of high power readings from a dyno or a quick pass at the 1/4 mile can be fleeting things indeed while the beastly idle, low speed driveability, starting issues, loudness, voided warranty, inability to pass emmisions testing, black smoke clouds from the exhaust, gasoline smells and a host of other potential issues will be with you forever

Like I said, it's fine to modify away and have lots of fun, but it's not something to be taken lightly. Also, it's not for the person who must have a dependable, every day driver or who cannot deal with the car being down on a regular basis to either continue with mods or modifying the mods themselves or fixing crap that is always going wrong. The big word is "Caveat modder"

Couple of months, yeah right! 7 days ago I said that i'd propably keep my Evo stock. Today I found myself ordering Helix 3" TBE, Apexi airfilter kit, boost meter, AEM wideband UEGO controller and gauge. So there you have it, my Evo will have her cherry popped in about two weeks when I should get all the stuff It's long way from California up here...

I'll be keeping it stock when I get it.

1. I can't afford to modify it.
2. I can't afford to lose my warranty so soon after purchasing a car (if I get a new one).

I would like to keep the evo stock, if i could get a second race only car.

It would be nice to actually talk to the passenger while driving without being so loud, or saying, huh?

technically, you're no longer completely stock . However, for intents of warranty, mechanical function, etc. I'd tend to think that such things as changes of badging, mud flaps, tail lights and other items of a cosmetic nature would not count against you.

Maybe some people enjoy the car just as it is. There is nothing wrong with that While there is a lot of enjoyment to be had from messing with the car, there is also a lot of enjoyment in just driving the car as it is and notr having the PITA of dealing with all kinds of problems and warranty issues. Oh yeah, in actuality, the best performance improvement most people can make is to spend the money and time in driving lessons I guarantee you that the average guy with the most modified EVO will be dog meat in a race track against a good driver with a stock Miata, let alone a stock EVO

Great post thomas!! I feel similar to you however its scary how with just the installation of a full 3 inch exhaust allowed my car to open up a bit. I find myself wanted to drive it more now it has become so much more fun to drive. I can't even imagine how much more fun I would have with additional mods. Being able to hear the turbo spool up under the restricted stock exhaust setup is just awesome!!
