When gasoline is refined, some of the sulfur that is present in crude remains and are not removed, hence the hydrogen-sulfide smell. Some refining companies are worst than others; therefore, the intensity of the smell may somewhat depend on where you purchased the gasoline. I think in some European countries, most of the sulfur is removed.
