EVO vs STI in Reliability, Modding, Plain out which car?

As far as I've read the EVO has 10x more problems then the STI, it seems like tons of people who arent planning on modding all that much still buy the EVO over the WRX. I personally love the EVO more but am now being pushed farther and farther away from the EVO as i learn about the problems of the car.

Why do people still buy the EVO over the STI? Also is the STI or the EVO faster at stock? I've read it both ways.

Please give me any info you guys know

The STI still has its problems. The only prob the Evo has is the clutch. the 4g63 is a pruven engine and i think the Evo is more reliable.

for a few mods sti is def better, no clutch or tranny issues and no motor issues under 450 whp in the STI. intake, turboback and ecutek and the car will run a 12.5 all day no clutch, tranny issues and it will be warrantied no problem. i still like th evo better for other reasons but even my own best friend is selling his 2004 sti for the same reason. he has those 3 mods and wants to get an evo cuz he wants to do more then the basic mods

They both are fast, reliable, tuneable, have extensive loyalty, have breakdowns common among their line, and kicka$$ given their cost of entry.

Which is faster is a moot point as they are too close to call in the real world.
There is more variance among drivers ability in these cars compared to the acceleration times between the two. In other words, to answer your 2nd question, the answer is "yes".

Take each for a test drive and pick the one YOU like.
I love the STi's boxer engine sound but the EVO fits me better and I like how it drives in comparison to the STi. The STi has the nicer ride over typical roads in my area but the EVO feels more glued to the road. Go find the differences for yourself.
It's the only way to get a true answer.

Now, let the EVO love begin. I hope they keep the STi bashing to a minimum cause it's an awesome car as well.

I think the EVO has more reliability because of the 4g63, it has been proven to be a very strong engine. The clutch seems to be the only problem that many people have, but its all on how you treat the car, i've got 16k miles on mine and its fine right now. I believe somone has about 60k on it aswell? Maybe more?

no problems with mine since 03 and there are 10 other evo owners around here that are highly modded and have no problems. You just have to know how to properly drive and the car will last. Things will break on any car though, so you always have to realize that Sh%$ happens! I'm not really sure why people post topics like this on an Evo specific board, of course it's going to lean towards the evo, just like posting on a subaru board with the same question would yield the sti as the winner. The best way to find out is to READ everything you can about both cars and try and set up a test drive, or at least go sit in one. Honestly there isn't any debate for me cause I already knew I wanted an Evo a long time before they came here. Both cars are very capable racing cars for the street and head to head it comes down to driver skill, so really it should be about which one gets your heart racing when you look at it.

maybe you could give us some more specific needs that you are looking for in these cars, that would help determine which might be better suited to you. If you really can't decide you just gotta look at both and decide which one gets you more excited. If possible I would wait till the end of this month when the USDM Evo 9 gets unveiled at the new york auto show.

I can't wait for the Evo 9 either. Hopefully we won't get shafted on AYC.

In terms of reliability... Subaru will honor warranty claims more than Mitsubishi, but that's about the only one I can think of. Some of the new USDM EJs have had detonation problems, so Evo has the better stock engine. Really, the STi "should" be better because of all the advantages: better AWD system, better engine layout (boxer vs. inline), more displacement (2.5l vs. 2.0l); but the Evo seems to be a well balanced car. I'd say if you're really worried, just go with an STi and never mod it.

I am def going to mod my car, so I don't know about just going with an STI and not modding it. I like the EVO looks so much more, plus the R1 bumper I wanna get.

The Subaru is even uglier than the Evo, isn't as mod freindly, but is probably more reliable and sturdier. According to Consumer Reports, Subaru took the number one spot for reliability in 2004. Beat Honda, Lexus, Mercedes etc
