If you truly believe it's that box, then take it out. See if you're still getting shocked.

I get a pretty nasty shock with this one fleece coat I have.. Sometimes it's a pretty powerful jolt.. you can actually see the electric. I have this with almost any car i'm in with that jacket tho.

It's the ground. I'm not familiar with the grounding points that this SUN system uses, but I do know that an improperly installed ground can/will lead to shocks. Also, buy touching the door while you touch the ground as you exit, will not reduce the risk of shock because a) the door handle is plastic and b) you're most likely wearing shoes which don't make a good ground either. Chances are that the electricity is arcing from some point near the door, such as the door jam or B pillar, to whereas as you exit you are close enough to the negatively charged item and it is jumping to you, a.k.a. the positively charged guy.

i heard that if you take one of those fabric softner towels that you throw in the dryer with your clothing and rub it on your car seats it will help against the static, but i have never tried it myself.

A grounding kit does not ground your car to the "ground"

For static try Bounce or some other fabric static reducer.
