2005 Evo8 Tranny Woes

1ST TRIP- so 6 weeks ago I notice my car (2005 evo8) grinding 5th a little bit at high rpm's. every other gear is perfect though. with my act/fidanza sitting next to me, I decided to bring it to a local mod-friendly dealer because they were willing to put my clutch/flywheel in for only 2 hours labor while the tranny was out. so I get the car back and everything is perfect except the shifter moves in 1st gear as you accelerate and deccelerate back and forth, almost like its going to pop out f gear but it never does. they tell me they spoke to the mitsu service rep and he says its fine. In my head I know this is BS and it shouldnt be moving but whatever, i love my clutch and I'm happy to have the car back and i'm assured that if there is a problem i can bring it back. I make i to my town, 20 mins away, and i cant get the car into 3rd gear no matter what i do.

2ND TRIP- So i go home and being it back in the AM skipping 3rd cuz no matter what u do it wont go in. they take the car, fix the problem and i get it back 4 days later. shifter still moves in 1st but 3rd seems ok. 2 days later car will barely go into any gear at all. very hard to get into gear. (they later told me they put the 3rd gear synchro upside down)

3RD TRIP- I bring it back and they say its because Of the gear oil I gave them (redline shock proof 75W90) BUT they figure better safe then sorry and rebuild it again this time. So I get it back and drive it around. from a stop its very hard to get into first and reverse and it shifts rough overall but I dont care at this point cuz I've been without my car what seems like forever. Car is going good for almost 2 weeks when this past thurs night i'm cruising down the highway doing 60mph on my cell with my Gf going to a bar and I smell what seems like rubber burning. I pull over and then pop the hood and look under the car to see if something is burning or rubbing against my tires. nothing. the car is making this sound that sounds like my tranny is a lottery machine full of rocks with numbers on them. Def at least 2000 rocks just bouncing around. I was scared to keep looking at it cuz I thought something was going to blow out of the bell housing and take my head off

4TH TRIP- I drive it to the dealer turning every head of anyone walking around because people think i'm dragging a fleet of shopping carts behind me. "Nah thats just my mitsu tranny" I leave my car there overnight and now the guy calls me and says "if this because of abuse then its not gonna be covered" i say WTF only 5th was messed up when I ordered it but now every other thing has went wrong. I'm 0running out of options here and dont know what to do. this dealer has been great because they are warranting ym car with the mods but if they blow me off i'm screwed. I'm starting to consider an STI.... someone please tell me what I shouldnt drive this car off cliff when I get it back????

You can always claim lemon law because of the amount of times you have brought the car in regarding your gears. Goodluck Steve and keep us updated.

I say hang in there. it sounds like there tranny mechanic isn't as great as he should be. If you went to get the 5th gear grind fixed and ended up with more problems then you left with. then that might be an indacation that the dealership might wanna look into another tranny mechanic.... IMO of course... good luck with your car. don't let this get you down. Sti's, or any other car for that matter, have problems to. your never gonna be able to get a trouble free performance car.

let us know what they say after they look at it this time. If they say it's been abused, you know that's BS and you should call a mitsu regional rep or something...

that blows man. You should be able to claim lemon law on it though. Good luck. If you've been going back to the same dealership, I suggest trying another dealership.

how much do those run? Why not try a different dealership before you shell out what I'm assuming must be 2,XXX dollars? You've got nothing to lose at this point.

Steve when I lived in New York my parents bought a jeep wrangler and there was always a ticking in the engine that no body knew what the hell it was. My Dad went and claimed lemon law on the jeep they sent a rep to the dealership they looked at the jeep looked at the records of what work has been done on it and wound up claming it a lemon. Wasnt to bad of a process actually.

Man, that sounds like you got a bum deal from the get go. When you start modding, it gets real touchy with getting warranty work done. However, IMO it sounds like the dealership you’ve been going to has some incompetent techs working there.

If you do get a new tranny from TRE (or wherever you get it from) I would highly suggest having someone other than the dealer put it in for you.

I would suggest trying another dealership first though.

I cant go to another dealer because My car is modded. I have a boost controller, turboback, fuel pump, reflash, FMIC, tv deck, PS2, intake, Bov, etc...

I dont wanna have to strip the car and then try lemon law, god forbid it doesnt work I'll have no car for the rest of them summer. I just want it fixed
