Potential Evo owner questions

Hey im selling my bmw on this forum, and was looking to get into an 01+ m3....but the more i read about evos the more intrigued i am. Prior to my 330CI i owned a 350awhp 99GSX. I miss working off of an engine thats so modification friendly. so im leaning towards getting an EVO MR or an EVO VIII, I would prefer to get a brand new MR but the price is kinda up there...the only part that i really want is the 6 speed transmission. I like how theres alot of 03 evos for $23k+ but am kinda worried about how they were taken care of....I kinda wanted to get a new one and made sure it was broken in properly. My buddy just got an 05 STI last week, how would my evo compare to his STI in performance? Is there any problems I should be aware of that occur on the EVO? thanks for the help guys. Hope to be an official member soon....

there are several problems like transfer cases going, weak clutches, fan recall, caliper recall but i'm sure you knew that since you used the search button right.

There are a large number of threads that will answer your questions. evo clutch is not very good. But the engine holds up to moddifications well. Go with the evo, there are some people on here that might be able to get you a good deal on an MR.

Search each topic and you will find many contrasting views. When taken together, you will come away with what the Evo is and isn't. I drove BMW for over 10 years. Nice road cars but lacking when you try to drive them ten tenths. Evos are hot rods, or if you prefer, detuned race cars. It isn't refined from a creature comfort stand point but it is FAST. It reminds me of the early Vetts in that regard. You can modify an Evo to do what ever you want as it is no "one trick pony." You know the drill concerning costs and consequences if you modified your GSX.

Get one. Your going to love it. Evo's are just like 2g's, but without the crankwalk. I came from a 97 GS-T and modding it is so easy, easier than a EJ25. There might be some problems with synchros, but it's covered under warrenty. They have a weak clutch that doesn't like to be beat on. That's about it.
I picked up a used one. If you consider 3K miles used. Be patient. The one you want is out there. I would not get a modded one. Wait for the one from an **** owner and jump on it.

STi's are great if you're not going to mod, or maybe do very simple mods, the EVO is a much better tuner's car. In magazine tests its been a flip flop between the two, but they are always within 10ths of each other, the cars performe VERY similar, they just have different ways of going abou it. General driving experiance is going to be quite different from your 330, they are a bit stiff, the steering is super quick, and you'll get different attention then you would in the M3 (some good, some bad). However, either car is faster then the M3

I replaced my totaled '04 STi in December with an MR. I was all set to buy an '05 STi because I liked my '04 so much, but my favorite dealer couldn't/wouldn't get me the car I wanted without a 6-week wait, so I started considering other options. One of the local Mitsu dealers had a gray MR, which was my first color/model choice, so I checked it out. Ended up test driving it, then taking it home overnight before I decided to buy. I would not have paid any markup on the MR, and probably wouldn't have paid MSRP. Luckily the dealer was hot to sell before the end of the year and I got it for $500 over invoice.

So far I miss the STi's low-end grunt and wide powerband. I don't miss the goofy hoodscoop and TMIC, the rubber wing, or the relentless understeer. The Evo's steering and handling are superior, and the seats are much better. Overall, performance is very similar, but the car's personalities are surprisingly different.

vtlaxplaya16 - I'm selling my '03 LY Evo VIII on Autotrader.com right now. Broke in properly, never abused, bone stock with 6,388 mi. Depends if you like the yellow or not. Mine has both sunroof and carbon fiber spoiler. Take a look! Asking $25,600 or an offer.
