My bad! I was searching for this info a few weeks ago and turned up nothing. The best that I could find was some info about the Yoko 32Rs which last around 10k miles. Like I've told others, all the more reason to set aside some spare $$$ *after* you buy an Evo.....

I'm not using the scholarship money to directly pay for the car. If I get another 20k in scholarships I will be able to use the money that I have saved towards college for other things. (as in evo) The only way I'll be buying the Evo during college is if I don't have to go into ANY debt with tuition or the car. I'll also being doing 7 co-ops while I'm getting my BS, since that's just the way the program is set up. I don't plan on getting this car until AT LEAST my second year of college, and at that point I'll decide how much longer I want to wait. The last thing I want to do is get into debt before I leave college, and if I can't afford this car up front, I'm not going to but it. Simple as that. I have thought about getting a lancer and then modding it, or perhaps just waiting until I had enough for the evo, but then I would lose money on the lancer selling it or trading it in.
Some good thoughts there. I received a couple of unexpected grants in my final years of college and I put my spare cash aside until I finished school. I then used that money to buy a beater when I graduated and was almost debt free. The beater lasted me a few years but I was able to save enough cash to buy a new car with a *big* down payment.

EvoWannabe - I live in Rochester and would suggest the snows. We don't get a lot (well, an average of 90 in. per year isn't a lot, right?) but it comes down several days a week for a third of the year. The Yokohama Advans would not cut it here.

Oh, one last thing. My company hires several co-ops per year from RIT. Are you going into one of the comp sci programs? If so, PM or e-mail me sometime and I can hook you up.

I graduated from RIT in 98, and thus spent several winters in Rochester. Im not sure an EVO would be the most wonderous car there. It would be great fun, but I wouldn't want it just from the sheer amount of destruction the winters do to your car. All the salt caked on.
You will definatlely need different tires, and a good set of mudflaps.

On the other hand, summers in Rochester are awesome. The weather is perfect, and there is so much to do. Out of any city in NY, I would want to be in Rochester. I lived in Albany for a while, and it was so damn boring.

I likely will be making a visit or two to Rochester this year as I still have a lot of friends up there. Whether my EVO makes the trek or not, I am not sure. I would drive up there just to get a Dibellas sub..mmmm.

My other thought was that I might get an AWD DSM for a car and then upgrade to the Evo when I have the cash, but as I said before, I'm leaning away from it.
Thanks for the offer Zero, but at this point I'm planning on getting my degree in chemistry (my main question is whether to go for just the BS or get the BS/MS degree in the same time. Either way I'll probably get a masters and ph.d.
I've been up to rochester a couple times and I really like both the city and the campus. I also had a great experience with my admissions guy. sorry if it's too off topic but... How'd did you like RIT?

I factory ordered my 97 Talon Tsi AWD back in '97 and attempted to move south before taking delivery of the car. I couldn't bear to think about driving a car like that through NY Winters. Believe or not, after 6 Winters, the car still looks mint and is none the worse for it. Of course it's garaged quite often and I wash/wax it about once a week. I plan on driving my Evo year round too. Hey, I live close to work and only put about 6k a year on my vehicles.

Make sure you get a garbage plate to go!

I give you props for having the restraint from buying a car like the Evo when there are hundreds of other rabid buyers-to-be that are willing to buy sight-unseen, markup unknown, auto mag reviewless, etc, etc. Just think of it this way, you can be driving the '05 Evo with the Super AYC, ACD and 320 stock hp while the rest of us gripe about buying too soon and paying the extra markup

PS - I never attended RIT. I've been on campus many times and have/had many friends and associates there. All I can say is that it's a long walk over to Nazareth College when you go trolling for the female of the species.

If I do get an Evo, I'll probably wash it about 6 times a day. I would also definitely want an indoor place to store my baby. So, there are still a lot of details I need to work out and my car probably won't actually be mine for a couple years yet, but it's still exciting knowing that I'll actually have a chance at an Evo (especially if we do get a couple electronic goodies and a nice front LSD).
Anyway, Zero, TearItUp said he went to RIT so that question was more directed at him, but I'd be more than happy to hear your thoughts on Rochester since at this point it looks like I'll be spending the next 5 years of my life there. From what I saw of RIT, though the female population was better than a lot of schools I looked at (I believe it was 40/60)....

in quebec we have BAD winters..

and it's worst to keep the cars indoors. If you run your car outside during the day, then drive home and garage it, the heat make all snow/calcium/ice melt and it damages the car and makes it rust wayy sooner. If you keep it in the cold all winter, it's better for the rust.

altough, if I get a body kit, for sure I'm getting back to stock bumpers/hood for the winter, because it's 100% certain that it will be damaged running it in winter.

And and if you want bad male/female fugures for an university.. mine is an engineering one with less than 10:90 ratio girls/boys ;-)

When I started RIT there was a 4:1 male/female ratio, but there was also no open container law on campus, so you could walk around with drinks. Now it is dry campus I think, but the male/female ratio is a lot better.
Rochester is awesome once you are 21 and can go out places. Also there are tons of other schools there where there are hot women. Brockport, Nazzareth, U of R, etc.
Rochester is a great city, I just wish it was down in NC or something so I didn't have to deal with the winter.
Also Canada is an alternative from there. When I went to school you could drink in Canada at 19. Im not sure if that is true anymore.
If you go though, try to coop in the winter down south and go to school in the summer. That is the best time.
Also make sure you go to the Nick Tahoe's and get that garbage plate (downtown is better if you aren't afraid of getting into a fight or getting shot).

Re: Re: I shee

The Yokohama 32Rs I would guess with the "R" designation is a race compound rubber tire which won't last more than 10k miles.

Is the Yokohama Advan A-046 specified on the EVO a race compound tread? I don't think so. I think its just an ultra-high performance, summer use only radial tire. Regardless expecting 25-30k out of a normal ultra-high performance summer tire is asking for dissapointment.

I do know from experience though, that most ultra-high performance tires like Michelin Pilot Sports and Pilot MXX3's, Bridgestone S03's, Toyo T1s, and Pirelli P-zero's to name a few, will provide 15-20k miles of use depending on your driving habits. Again these are not "R" compound tires.

If you take your car to the track "R" compound or not, then all bets are off.

I personally like the Toyo T1S as well my current Pilot sports. They are reasonably priced, work well in dry and wet conditions and look great to boot.A major plus for the T1S is that they do appear to wear better than most performance tires with reports of people getting 25k out of them.

Considering that tire wear conditions, and tire construction/ratings have more impact on handling capabilites than anything else, I think keeping your tires maintained and replaced as needed, especially on a car like the EVO, is a small price to pay for good handling. Just my .02
