Vishnu Stage 1+ Modifications: Review
Happiness is....
A Vishnu modified Evo.
Seriously, I'm having a ball! The car has a much, much, smoother, faster, power band. I have way to much fun every time I drive my car. On top of that, I have no check engine lights, no hiccups, no burps, no problems of any kind so far... except for a speeding ticket. Except for that last point, this package, this result, is what I was looking for. The RS is fast enough to be VERY fun, but not so fast that I’m breaking parts every week. (been there, done that) You can see my dynosheet in the list of other dyno graphs posted on this site.
I did the Stage 1 plus package, that is; Dump back Catless exhaust, Walbro 255 fuel pump, Cam Gears, HKS 272 Cams, XEDE, and XEDE ECU flash. Then the car was tuned by Shiv on a Dyno Dynamics Dyno. Just for the record, I have great respect for the other Tuners in the Evo community like (your favorite). There are many paths to the improved performance that most of us seek.
Now back to my poorly organized, grammatically grating review:
I really wanted to objectively comment on the side effects, or things that some people might not like about doing something like this. Everybody likes the power, but what comes with the power? So, I should address a few points beyond the FUN RETURN of the Vishnu modifications, specifically the exhaust, the idle, and the fuel pump.
First the exhaust; I installed the Signature Series dump back exhaust with a test pipe In my Evo RS which has very little sound deadening to begin with. In Daily driving, I love the way it sounds. I roll my windows down to hear it. When I go under an over pass, or in sound amplifying area’s, I hit the throttle just to hear the car. Its music to my ears. At cruising RPMS, 2k to 3k, I hear a deep but relatively soft hum. At full throttle with the windows up or down, this puppy is LOUD. It is not deafening or painful in the car, but boy it Howls like a wolf on Steroids. Again, I stress, that is at full throttle. But, If anyone ever tells you this exhaust sounds whiny or high pitched, they are lying through their teeth or just plain stupid. At full throttle the exhaust note is a deep hum with a racing, rising, intensity all the way to red line.
Is it too loud? Does it ever get on my nerves? On the way back from Georgia I drove 5 hours at an average speed of 80 mph, sometimes 70, sometimes 90. At 4000 and greater RPM’s on the highway, for hours, yes, this catless exhaust can wear on my nerves. I would get a silencer (found one by the way) for a long road trip, or for carrying my Grandmother around in the back seat through a china shop.
Now in regard to the Idle as affected by the Cams and Cam Gear settings. HKS 272’s. Are they too much? Is the idle unbearable? Now, please, no one get offended: If this idle is too rough for you, you’re a WUSS. I love it! The car sounds MEAN. Every time I hear the car idling after it has warmed up, I’m reminded of V-8 Muscle cars. The car has gone from a smooth stock drone of an idle, to a very distinct lope. Its almost like a heart beat that you can feel through the car. But, I have always been a fan of lopey idles. To me it is a sign of power. The car has not stalled in 90 degree temperatures after a hard run with the AC turned on full blast afterward. To date, under no conditions has the car stalled during warm up, in stop and go traffic, or going into or out of high rpms. But, make no mistake, after the car is warmed up, the idle will sound radically different than stock. The car never comes close to dying, (not in my case anyway) it just seems to be taking MUCH deeper breaths, like a beast waiting to get out of a cage.
Lastly, the Walbro 255 fuel pump, sometimes called the Whinebro with affection or hate. I mention it only because some people do complain about it. I have never noticed the sound of it. This may in part be due to fact that I am always listening to my stereo, or my exhaust… .(both the former and the later now serving as entertainment to me). Now I even find myself pausing before I turn the car off, to listen to the 272’s idle, (or growling as I like to think of them).
And oh yes, a Catless Exhaust definitly makes more stinky gas, but it is no big deal. I would do the test pipe every time. (unless I lived where you live, where emissions are much stricter) Sure, go stick your face in your exhaust pipe and you may want to get a cat again. (Protectors of the environment, you are absolutely right.. I am a monster)
I installed the Cams and Cam gears with the help of evomoto.com’s cam installation guide and a couple of tips from Andrew at Dyno4mance. (and the help of a good friend with air tools) I made my own timing belt tensioner tool for $3.00. I installed my exhaust system. Dyno4mance installed my fuel pump and set the timing on my Cam Gears. Shiv tuned the car and then gave me a ride I'll never forget. I had no idea what my car was capable of. That ride is a whole story in itself.
P.S. Dyno4mance is a first class shop in my opinion, with the best customer service I have ever received at such a place. (just wish they weren't 5 plus hours away)

Yes, It hits hard. A friend of mine said, "How do you drive anything else after this?"
