Water and alky both cool the intake charge and alky is also a fuel.

So are most of the alcohol kits out there used to cool the intake, or are they injected along with the fuel?

Those aren't 2 different applications. It removes heat from the combustion chamber thereby raising the knock thresh hold. Also at the same time alky is a higher octane than pump gas. It is sprayed into your upper ic piping. I have heard of a guy that mixed it with his gas and was having good luck. He was pouring about 2/3 gallon methanol in with a full tank of gas. He said that his car ran smoother, eliminated a slight ping the car had and got better gas mileage.

My dyno graph's AFR showed about 12.0 to 12.2 from 4000 RPM to redline. That was with a tailpipe sniffer and a cat in place. I'd be willing to stake Shiv's reputation that detonation was not a problem and that no timing was being pulled, since he spent a fair bit of time tuning the car and wearing one of those funny looking knock headsets...

I was speaking of true a/f, not false a/f through a cat. Those a/f with no cat would pull timing on pump gas. He probably has a true a/f of 11.5/1
