PUMPING GAS with engine on
car might seem like it is going to stall because the fuel tank is under a vaccum when the car is running, and opening the gas cap... well... you get the picture. Might throw a cel also.

seriously i heard that because there is vaccum while the car is on you might create a air pocket some where and i does some thing ....? i dont know but i heard it can fuc k **** up though. sorry i wanst any help but maybe some one can carry the torch from here.
there was something about doing as least as possible while pumping gas
i.e. walking in & out of your ride to get stuff, clean misc. stuff, etc. etc.
the movement can cause excess static electricity to build on your body w/out one knowing it and this can cause fire, meaning while putting that gas nozzle back, there is an increased chance even though highly unlikely of literally catching on fire
not as dangerous as smoking while pumping gas but nevertheless, ill advised

when you open the gas door it loses pressure and creates a lean condition. the car will stutter and maybe stall like running out of gas. it is a nono. just shut her down.
It sounds like you are filling up with the engine running which is a no-no. With the engine running and you take the gas cap off, you loose pressure in the tank. Always stop the engine when you are filling up. You're lucky you don't throw a cel.
