The used EVO buyers guide.

Hey everyone, I am not going to be in an EVO for several months however I wanted to soak up as much info as possible before I make a move on one once I get back from military training, I plan on buying this time next year. Well first and foremost I have considered every car imaginable, changed my mind a million time about what I want to get and I have come to the draw between the STi and the EVO... the EVO won, numerous reasons... looks, proven potent powerplant, resonds better to mods etc etc. I have the overall plan for the car being, more potent then stock but nothing heavily modded or complex, I just want the car to be clean, well done and have a little bit of everything.

Buying a used EVO can be tricky and I have heard from many that it is a bad idea however I am hoping with a little bit of time (this is not like buying an MKIV TT Supra) I will find the right car for me. I would like a white one, and I was considering an EVO RS... they are not as abundant as the regular EVO's and they only come in two colors, a tiny bit lighter and a nice base to build from because usually the used ones have very few miles on them, I just like the whole idea of them... call me crazy but crank windows, no A/C etc it's kinda cool in a sense I think it really gives the passenger a WTF NO A/C?! This must be a race car.

I want this in the end to be a clean fairly lightly modded car with some kick and a little exterior spice beyond stock. I ideally would like a white RS but I won't discriminate against a good deal in a different color on a regular VII or RS. I would like to set enough money aside once I get the car to get the parts I really want, like wheels... I would love to have some Volk 17's... I feel it really makes a statement when you have them and they just give off a real deal tuner look. I will stay with the stock turbo, CF hood, some tint, volks... no flashy stickers or ricer BS. I would like some real world used EVO purchase advice without going into hardcore detail about little pointless things, shopping and finding one that has been taken care of can't be that hard can it? I would like an 04 with low low miles, 20,000 ish? and I will be putting about $3,000 down, hoping to spend under $24,000.

you sound just like me!
i bought a preowned white evo in january and like you said i want to keep it simple!
anyways, i got a 04 with everything i wanted for 28K.... it only had 1500 miles on it! i asked EVERYONE before i got it and everone said "**** YEAH!" it was a good deal, i see '03's going on autotrader with more miles for thousands more than i paid for mine...
so what can i tell you make sure you LOOK and dont be bull****ted with a rediculous mark up! do some research on depreciation and all that jazz and you should be able to estimate a logical price.

JUST BE PATIENT, YOUR CAR WILL COME AROUND. Make sure you look around, I picked up a white 03' with 1900mi on it for $25,500 out the door with an 03' Mazdaspeed protege trade-in that I got $11,800 for!

You should test drive it first and inspect it with a list of regular evo problems to check for.

Easier said than done, but hedge your bet by buying one as close to stock as possible, preferably with a documented service history.
