wow man glad u made it out, but yeah unless theres something you arent telling us, this shouldnt have happened unless something mechanical went wrong - you would have to really jerk the steering wheel to get it to spin out like that, but once you lost control it sounds like you overcorrected. i would make sure its not going to happen again before going onto the freeway again, because that could have been MUCH worse if there were other cars around

glad you made it out alive, but your story sounds fishy. first, you say something locked up and then you admit it may be your fault for changing lanes too quick. there is something you're not telling us. i'm guessing you wanted to impress your friends and jerked the steering wheel too fast not knowing the consequences and...

reset the ecu

Yep this was also a trick that I used when I busted a U-turn and the car stalled out on me. I tried to start it, but it wouldn't work for a couple times. So I waited for about 30 sec then start it again. I worked, but the check engine light showed up. So I went home and reset the ECU, and it's been normal eversince. It's good that you're safe

EVo's pretty good about spinning out. You could actually regain control without car going into complete stall out while spinning.

done it few times at the auto-x. I could actually feel the car stalling out right after the car stopped.

nothing fishy here, its just that it all happened so quick i dont know wat was the factor that sent it spinning. the more i think of it the more i wanna say it was driver error and my fault. But at first i def thought it was something mechanical, i mean it was like something outta a movie.

i was thinking as you switched lanes, you went in fast but possibly hit an oil slick, dont think it was an error on your part or a lock in the rear diff... also did you brake hard when you started sliding? cuz that woulda made it worse... ofcourse your rear passengers throwing weight around just compounded the huge weight transfer hehe

None of this seems to add up. First off just having 4 people in the car is not going to affect a single lane change. Secondly saying you tried to change lanes to quickly does not make sense either. If you tried to change lanes at too severe of an angle based on the speed you were traveling at that makes much more sense. If you were traveling at 85, and tried to make a lane change at a 90 degree angle of course you are going to fish tail. Even if you tug the wheel and change lanes really quickly at a reasonable angle you will not loose control on dry pavement, unless you over steer in the opposite direction to counter the lane change. So for example you are driving in the fast lane at 85, and you jerk the wheel to the right to quickly change lanes. Then you jerk the wheel to the left to straiten yourself out, only you jerk it too far, and the next thing you know the back end starts to spin counter clockwise. If you did anything like this, it should be completely obvious to you what you did, and you should have been able to tell us in 1 sentence, “Here’s what I did wrong”. If this was not the case, then there must be some additional detail you are leaving out. For example, were you hydroplaning in water when you attempted to make the lane change? Where you stepping hard on the brakes while changing lanes? Was there black ice, or an oil slick on the roadway? A banana peel? If this accident wasn’t caused by your own steering input, then there must be some other external factor.

Have you checked your tire tread/pressure? That can contribute a lot to the cause.

Man, you better explain yourself better. You say the the back wheels locked up, but have no idea of what happend. Its the DRIVER not the CAR. (was it raining, dirt road, flat tire...)

If your rear end were to seize up, I don't think it is possible for it to unseize.
How much gas was in the car at the time? There is a valve designed to cut fuel flow in case the car ends up on its lid, maybe in all the spinning the the fuel got away from the pickup and tripped the sensor.

Can you list your mods for us, especially suspension mods. At high speeds the EVO can oversteer quite easily depending on the quickness of the driver's steering input. This just sounds like a case of driver error to me, quick input unsettling the balance of the car. People don't realize how dangerous it is to drive the EVO at high speeds. Glad you and your friends are not injured and be careful next time. I have to agree with GPtourer about the rear end seizing up.

What do you mean drive the evo 'at high speeds'? Do you consider 85 high speed? I have a hard time believing that the cause is 'driver error'. At 85, one may safely make quick lane changes in a Nissan Maxima. So, why should a quick lane change at 85 send an EVO spinning????? If my evo can't make a quick lane change on the freeway at 85, then that's sad!

Has anyone else spun out at 85 while making a quick lane change? Better yet, has anyone NOT spun out at 85 while making a quick lane change?
