I'm just curious. I think the 6-speed on the camero is like 440ft-lb and 295 for the T5 5-speed on mustang gt's.

Dude, what are you talking about? Your question makes no sense.

Are you asking about how much torque the Evo 5-spd tranny reliably can handle?

SC~ who hates vague questions :P

Vague question? Torque rating on the trans. What's so confusing about that? Don't you know transmissions have torque rating it's designed for?

WOW!! gtr, who do you think is going to give you such a number? ? People that where pushing few stock trainies until they finally melted a few gears? Personally, I never heard of such a numbers...guestimates on how much they can transfer to the wheels, Yes. But, friend of mine broke his center diff on his DSM with all ESP mods (goes up to 270 HP/280 lb at the flywheel), while mine lasted without any problems. The fact is that he tried really hard to brake it at the time (not on purpose, of course) and he succeeded! Does that mean that DSM trainies are good for up to 270 HP/280 lb or 320 HP/330 lb as long as you don't drop very grippy 2600 lb clutch at 6000 RPMs off the line?

I remember when i had my mustang i've selected trans based on gear ratio and torque ratings. Pretty common with domestic cars. I figure if i dump the clutch with the maximum torque rating on the trans higher i dont' have to worry about the trans

Well, if you use a straight ceramic clutch with enough clumping force, you could probably break something in a stock trim, even on the EVO

<brake corrected to break>

I was hoping some mechanic whom already has a service manual could possibility tell us the torque specification on the trans. I think the strongest "affordable" 5-speed is a tremac with handles 335ft/lbs or something.

I'm just curious does Getrag make trans for Mitsubishi? Getrag makes one of the smoothest trans unlike subaru's which i'm guessing the gears aren't meshed as well causing a course stiff shifts

ehhhhh,.. getrag tanny's. i hate getrag. my stealth's getrag was always in the shop egting a syncro fixed, or output spline, or gear, or..etc the list goes on. never shifted like silk, never ran properly. i hope getrag didnt make the evo's transmission.

Really? The getrag on my M3 felt like silk. Maybe they made different grades? Thought the vr-4 uses the same getrag as the supra turbo? Was it bad when it was new or wasn't serviced?

3800lbs isnt' healthy on any drivetrain with high torque and AWD dump.

Hailz!

If any of you guys has ever played Motor City Online, you would know that Every tranny ever made has a Maximum Torque Rating associated with it.

They list the actual Torque ratings on dozens of trannies made from 1927 to today.

Its a commonly known number. Learn something new instead of being wise-asses.

brake or break? I'm not correcting you at all. I'm just wondering if i'm understanding correctly.

Also, does dropping the clutch at 6,000 significantly shorten the life of the clutch ? (sorry, I have never driven an AWD). I'm sure mitsu took that into consideration especially since the clutch gets brutalized during rally races. Afterall, we are buying an reproduction of the real rally racer...hopefully the clutch is nearly indestructable (i hate replacing clutches)

yes dumping the clutch at 6k will wear it out very quickly.
and rally cars get new clutches installed before every rally for the most part. (I used to be a mechanic for a SCCA rally team)
Using an aftermarket clutch (like an ACT 2600) is a good idea, and that's what I'll be putting in my evo once the stocker goes on me.

Of course it does!

Far from indestructible! They have a clutch in there to be gentle to the drivetrain in the first place and good enough for the normal (whatever that is for the EVO) driving.

If you have never replaced a clutch on the AWD car, then welcome to the new level of hate that you would need to develop! Although, EVO engineers did much better job there than they did on DSM for example, still...

I guess that is why you call yourself a "chimp"

Why can't you learn something from these forums rather than ragging on every one?

If you have nothing positive to contribute, I'd prefer you not respond to my posts.

P.S. Truth is Truth, no matter it's source.
