SC - I think your $500/700 estimates are WAY low. I'm thinking more along the lines of $1500-2000 (if it covers as much as it claims to), or roughly $200/trip.

My Mitsu dealer is about 15 miles from my house - that is 30 miles round trip to drop it off, then 30 miles to pick it up.

That won't be happening. I wonder if the receipts for Mobile 1 purchased would suffice?

Just think of how much oil the idiots at Jiffy Lube could dump all over the engine bay as they try to talk and fill the oil at the same time.

I am absolutely sure you are correct in that. I was just pricing the cost of the 2 main services they offered....I didn't include a price for the 27pt check and whatever else they do. I'd be suprised if the initial offer price for a pit pass was less than $1k.

SC~who'll be doing his own oil changes.

What kind of proof is needed to convince a dealer that you've been doing oil changes every 5000 miles and doing other appropriate maintenance? Will receipts for oil and filters be enough?
You have to figure that dealers will find any excuse possible to void your warranty. They'll also say that you haven't been performing other maintenance, like inspecting filters, hoses, and belts. Please... like those things are really difficult.
I took my Maxima in for a TSB last year and they asked me if I had the 15K mile service done... I said no, I do my own maintenance, and they looked at me like I was crazy. I guess they're not used to dealing with people who have car knowledge. Checking fluid levels, inspecting belts, and changing filters doesn't require a dealer visit or the inordinately high service charge they want you to pay.

The dealer certainly won't do anything that will deny warranty work. They like getting paid. It's not the dealer service department that ultimately decides.

Staying within your warranty is really simple folks. Follow the recommended maintenance schedule (and forget about the 5,000 mile thing, the way an Evo will get used it will be the severe schedule or nothing) and keep records and reciepts - just like you would with any other car.

It's not that hard.

The Pit Pass is valid at any Mitsu dealer (you get a nifty little card to keep in your wallet right? )

The car takes 4.8qt oil, plus 0.3qt with a filter change and 0.3qt in the cooler (meaning there's a separate drain for the cooler?). Anyway, you're looking at 6qts of Mobil 1 tri-syn, at about $5/qt = $30. Filter should run you ~$6-$10 depending on what you get (special Evo filter?) so yeah, ~$40 if you DIY.

Anyone know if there is anything special about the Evo's filter? And what oil weight are we looking at (not that it makes a diff to the price). Mobil 1 has a 0W-40 that a lot of turbo owners love.

First post from a n00b, watch out!

Anyway, Mitsu cant void your warranty with out proof that something you did (a mod) or didnt do (oil changes) caused damage to your car. You dont have to take your car in to the stealership to have the oil changed, just keep the reciepts from your oil/filter purchase and you'll be all set.

Also, if you have a Costco in your area Mobil-1 is around 23 bucks per case (6 qts.)

Wow! Never thought about bringing in your own fluids before...
Will they still charge you a disposal fee for the old oil??

Yes, they will, probably a buck a quart. You could just change it yourself, take the old oil to your local auto parts store (for free) and save a bucket of money.

In case anyone was wondering. I've seen a few people ask what weight oil the Evo will use. It's 10-30 Mobil 1 Tri-Synthetic. That's the standard oil the dealers will use and it's the same oil I've used in all of my sports cars. It's in the brochure if you have it.
