Stock HP.

I was wondering what the stock HP on the V/// is, is it 271hp or 276? or did it jump in 04 or 05 over the 03's etc etc. I know the IX is going to be 286 but what were the factory ratings for 03,04, 05... does the 271 dyno the same as the 276, they just might have underrated it? This would have a big impact on what year I buy obviously if a certain year is more potent.

the 05 has more than the 04 and 03. if you want the baddest stock evo definitely get the 05 with the 10.5 turbo.

All EVOs make more power than advertised, the 03s and 04s were making anywhere from 230-240AWHP which is more like 285-295HP (Flywheel). Think about it, the EVOs and STi's have always trapped similiar and also they have been laying down very similiar WHP. The 05s are making even more power, they are dynoing at around 240-250AWHP, which is around 295-305HP (Flywheel).

I can't stand it when people act like the STi is so much faster than the EVO, it may have been slightly faster than the 03 models, and this was due more to gearing than power, but no more. The 2004 models are probably just as quick and fast, and the 2005 models from the RS and GSR, to the MR are all quicker and faster. Also isn't the STi limited to 145MPH top speed, the EVO has always been toping out well over 150MPH. The only thing that says the STi is faster is paper, the real world paints a much different story.

they always under-rate vehicles, it's just a factory thing. What maks the 05 model slightly quicker?

The newer models have tweaked turbos (10.5 hotside). The 9 will have MIVEC and more turbo tweaking. Older models can be moded to equal the new ones. IN additon to power, the drive train has been more in line with the Eur/Asian models. The 6spd and limited slip front diffs are significant upgrades. If I were in the market right now I'd wait for the 9. The stock HP varies from car to car so 271 is a min. and higher figures for the later models reflect additional tunning. The evo is a bomb, modded it will outperform anything near its price as well as cars like the 140k plus mustang 500 due out later this year. Check out the perfomance cars from Vishnu, Buschur, and others.

The 03's and 04's are both the same. They both have the 9.8 hotside and are both rated at 271 hp. The 05's have the 10.5 hotside and are rated at 276 hp. Those are the only powerplant differences between different model years. As for underrating, 271 or 276 is the low end of a range of power levels from stock cars. Every car is different.

In 2003 and 2004 the Evo VIII had 271 hp @6500 and 273 torque @3500
In 2005 the specs were 276 hp @6500 and 286 torque @3500
The new 2006 model with MIVEC has 286 hp @6500 and 289 torque @3500.

Thats straight from Mitsubishi.

If you figure you are loosing at least 25% of your crank HP through the drive train (probably more in 4WD) , then realistically a stock Evo is going to be putting out around 200 HP at the wheels. It's true the 05's have slightly more HP and Torque, but don't forget they also have ACD. There are more parts moving togther and thus more friction in the drive train = more loss of HP. My guess is the reason Mitsubishi upped the HP in the 05's was to compensate for the additional losses from the additional drive train hardware. I don't think there will be any increase in stock acceleration numbers untill the IX.

05s consistently dyno higher than 03-04s by 10-20whp. This is AFTER the drivetrain losses, so your theory doesn't seem correct. 05s also consistently run faster 1/4-mile times with higher trap speeds if you pay attention to the drag racing forum and/or sigs (like mine). The 05s were underrated by Mitsu even moreso than the 03-04s.
