Does a loud exhaust necessarily mean more HP?

Or is it in the bends and pipe diameter(sp)? Is it just a fact that in order to make the power you have to use less restrictive baffles in the muffler, hence the noise. (ie. blitz, buschur, etc.) Not that I mind the sound at all, I was just wondering what goes into tuning an exhaust and what the engineers are trying to do.

Piping diameter probably plays the largest role in what your exhaust is going to sound like, and it does require larger piping to make more power.

test pipe would maket he car a lot louder, in turn, making more power than with the stock cat, or hi lfow cat

On a turbo car, less restriction = better.

NA car, increasing piping diameter isn't always going to help, since the car needs back pressure to expel the gases.

It's all about air flow. Loud doesn't necessarily mean more power, as resonators don't effect flow, just noise. Give the exhaust a smooth free ride out, and you'll make more power, resonators or not.

Gotcha, thats kinda what I was wondering about the resonators. I was wondering there effect on power. This may be off, but the resonators then would be almost like a silencer on a gun. Doesnt stop the bullet from flying out, but supresses the noise. For some reason I thought the resonators would disrupt flow somewhat and kill some power. This is kinda where my loud=hp question came from. I guess I was thinking that resonators that flowed the best would have to be loud in order to get the gas out of there smoother.

Exhaust design and how it effects noise. There are some other very interesting articles in there written by Michael Delaney who is an absolute genius.

90 degree manderal bends, straight through resonators and such have little to no effect on performance. (Contrary to public belief.)
