Getting EVO

ok i need a little advice

the evo i am looking to buy tomorrow has gotten a new engine

its at daytona mitsubishi

the dealer said some parents bought it for a 17 year old, first car, he didnt know how to drive, he blew the motor

it took one month to replace the engine, the parents were to impatient and just got another car

i have checked carfax, and what he told me is true

lancer is a 2003, 9800 miles, $23,000

so what do you guys think, what should i be looking at

also since the engine has been replaced, i would get 3 years, 36,000 miles warranty

VEHICLE REACQUIRED

Vehicle reacquired by the manufacturer pursuant to applicable state consumer warranty laws or to promote customer satisfaction.

Reason:
Excessive time out of service for engine repairs

thats what carfax says

1st of all, your clue is 17 YEAR OLD!!!!!!!!!!!!! what else did he blow???? you don't know if the transmission is any good, if the gears in the rear diff are damaged, etc... steer clear my friend & get a new one. OH, FYI carfax doesn't show everything. for example, if the kid bought the Ralliart gauge cluster, then the car may have more miles than you think since the new gauge cluster would start at 0 miles all over again.

Hey iam 17 and not as much of an idiot as that kid so dont hate on ALL 17year olds :P.

But ya if that kid was dumb enough to blow the motor, he had to of messed up some other stuff, i would personally be safe and go with a newer car. Iam guessing if he was dumb enough to blow the motor, that each shift was "SCREEEEEEEEECH" grinding.

"Kid: Hrmm daddy do i hold the clutch half way to make the gears change when iam going slow? Then when i go fast i keep the gas going and lightly tap the clutch while trying to changing gears?"

Drive the car, make sure the transmission shifts fine in all gears. And then of course give it a thorough inspection and you should be fine.

You can find some other used '03 for that price and without a changed out engine.

But theres a big reason why its that low priced. Who knows what else besides the engine. If the dealerships gurantees that if anything else goes wrong they will fix it.. then might be worth it.. but Test drive the **** out of it first. Man launch that thing, and see each gear and make sure notn grinds . Make the dealer crap himself while he is sitting there with u.. haha

I would say to absolutely stay the hell away from this car. 23k is no less than what other 03 Evos are selling for. I know it only has 9800 miles, but people are buying 03s for 23-24k all over the place WITHOUT any previous damage. You could even just get a brand new 05 for 28k, which is a FAR better choice than getting a damaged 2yo car for 5k less. If I were you, I'd consider trying to find a great deal on an 05 GSR now that the IXs are coming out. Just think, for 5k more, you get a BRAND NEW CAR, a 5yr/60k bumper-to-bumper warranty, a 10yr/100k mile powertrain warranty (engine/drivetrain), 10yr/100k rust protection, free roadside assistance, no miles, no previous owner, no damage, MORE horsepower/torque, and NO WORRIES about potential damage.

If you absolutely can't pay more than 23k, then look around some more for an '03 or '04 with 15-20k miles. If you don't mind an RS, you have even more options.

I can relate

Bought a used evo for 24,000. with 12,000 milees on it good deal right.
Except even when i drove it and got it checked out. I never shifted into 5th at high RPMs. There waas infact a grind I realized. However it was still under warrenty, so i got that fixed, then the stupid dealership forgot to put transfer case fluid in and blew that. So all said and done i didnt have my car for like a month aand a half but got an new transfer case. It caused a whole lot of headaches. But everything seems fine SO FAR. The experience with my evo has been frustrating so, I WISH you luck.

Stay away. I was in a similar situation when I bought my car. At another dealer there was a used '04 with 6k miles that they wanted 25,700 for. I decided to play it safe and bought a new 05 at invoice. Suck it up and buy a brand new one, so much more satisfaction knowing everything is brand new.
