in car computer system?

fren of mine told me about putting an in car computer system. he pointed me to a website.

mp3car

touch screen, computer systems, power everything.

i was thinkin of doin a car computer system, wit their touch screen retractable monitor also. but here's wat i was wondering.

im not that big of a carbuff wen it comes to the electrical side of the cars, but from wat i heard from my fren, you can hook this up to the ecu possibly, an maybe display some engine parameters right onto the screen. is this possible? if it is, i think id go this route cuz i think itd be a cool addition.

You could use a computer-based OBD scanner tool (software + hardware connector cable). If the car computer is already handling the video output to the LCD, you are set.

how much did it cost you in total? And did you install it yourself or did you have someone do it for you?

Ok I got a few pm's so I'll answer them here. Total cost: $650-700. I had a bunch of pc parts that I semi-threw together. I found drives for laptops to be a bit more stable with the bumping around (i.e. dvd drive/hard). I got the Zeitronix wideband and their boost and EGT sensors. So the digital gauges show boost/rpm/wideband o2/egt's/and tps. I got Microsoft Streets&Trips with GPS locator from CompUSA on sale. I use a different program for GPS though. The DVD drive is really nice as I can put 4.7 gig of MP3's on a single disc. I have a USB hub in the glove box that I use with a thumb drive for datalogging that I can transfer to my home PC. The PC sits under passenger seat with the drive facing the rear (easy access). I use an Opus power supply with an atx controller to power the system on with the ignition. I also use a Lilliput 7" touchscreen got from eBay for like $200.00. This was a pretty easy install, but I'm pretty familiar with auto electronics. If anyone needs help let me know.
