A Couple Qusetions On Evo8

Ok i was wondering a few things here.....Tires and oil changes I have just been told by a dealer that the tires will only last 10,000 miles and the oil needs to be changed every 2,ooo miles.

He also said the video you have to watch before you purchase this car will go over this as well. So i guess service cost for this car will be alot higher , the tires you can just get different ones.

Has anyone in here heard the same thing?

Also will a roof rack for a bike fit this evo,, I told my bike dealer that it was kind of like the Lancer only 3 inches taller.

What are some of your thoughts on this?

Thanks.

Yes, 10k miles on the tires with AVERAGE use. If you're a hard driver, much less. Not sure about the 2k miles, I heard 3k miles, but you have to be methotical about that. Absolutely no more than 3k miles.

You can get different tires, but you'll have a performance difference compared to the stock rubber. Think about the stock rubber as racing slicks.

Bike rack!?!? With all the screaming about the extra weight, I'd never have guessed people want to add a bike rack to the top of the Evo. Hehe...

I suppose you could, since there is those rails, same as the Lancer, which looks like it supports a rack of some sort.

The Technician training slides did say 5000k due to the synthetic mobile 1 oil. I did think that sounded high, and I don't care if God himself told me 5000k was ok, I'd still change the oil every 2500K

Oh yeh, and a bike rack? Dude just get a WRX. They're great cars and fun to drive. No offense, but I (and many, many others) would laugh (or cry) at the sight of an EVO with a bike rack. Just my 2 cents.

Every 5,000 miles is the "Regular Schedule" for people who never race and only drive on the freeway.

What you will actually be using is the "Severe Schedule" which requires a service every 3,500 miles.

Is Mitsu selling this "Pit Pass" as an add-on for every car they sell now? Because if it is just for the Evo, then you should be able to choose between the regular or severe maintenance schedule....

How do they know if your car is severely or regularly driven?

I think it would be difficult for Mitsu to deny warranty claims if you are still within that 5k interval.

And who is ever going to admit to Mitsu that they race their car? No one who ever wants to have warranty service done!

Unless you race your car daily, an oil change every 2500 miles is excessive. After 2500 miles, the oil has barely been used. 5000 miles with a filter change in-between will work, or something along those lines.

Any good 100% synthetic oil should easily last 5000 miles.

please don't insuniate that, no matter how good the stock rubber ends up being, this car will be fitted with anything even closely resembling racing slicks.

fireball, i assuredly have appreciated lots of the info and opinions you have shared here, but those two statements are a little lacking...

and on topic of those 2000*k*, 3000*k*, or 5000*k* oil change intervals others are discussing, good luck at getting to even the first 100k (er...100,000)

i'm under the impression that the thing that usually needs the shorter interval is the filter and not necessarily the oil (such as a good synth like rebo mentioned above).

some of those talented DIYers out there actually do that, especially those that spend the BIG bucks on NEO fluids and the like...

EDIT: btw, silvrvr6, have at that bike rack, bud. don't let anybody else tell you different. (:

That's exactly what I do with my VR6. I use Amsoil 5w30, and change it every 8000 miles with a filter swap in-between (4000 miles). If I had a turbo, I might shorten the intervals b/c the exhaust heat from the turbo will stress the oil a bit more, but it should still have a relatively long life.

I've always wanted to send my oil out for analysis after 8000 miles. It looks visually "clean," but I'd like to see what's going on in there... I've seen other independent test comparing Mobil 1 and Castrol Syntec. Both are very good and the test results that I saw (at 5000 miles, IIRC) revealed that both oils were good for extended use.

Oh yeah, dude! No offense but I and many, many, many others will laugh (or cry) at the sight of an EVO driven by a clueless kid like you, probably even dragracing this car.

I'm sure the Nitto NT555 will be good like the Yoko's.... But I prefer the fun of lesser grip tires so you can drift the car... Oil changes, well my father owns a Japanese Auto Repair shop, and it's always been a good idea to change oil at every 3000 miles, give or take a few hundred... But as long as it's near 3000 you'll be ok... That goes for regular and synthetic oils... Always use a Mits oil filter for every change....
