NYC AREA-need help on my speeding ticket
i was going like 110mph on the highway where speedlimit was 50mph.
i didnt know the cop was behind me when i hit the gas hard.by the time i slow down , the cop pulled me over.
the question is
isnt it illegal for local nypd cops to pull me over on the highway?
i thought only highway patrol can do this ,
and i asked him to show me a radar speed reading. and he couldnt show me,cause he was following me and he just guess it out on the ticket that was 75mph....
you think i can fight in this situation?
thanks

yes your best bet would be to hire a lawyer to represent you and help get your charges penalties reduced.
yes NYPD can pull you over and ticket you....undercover cops can do it also.
beware of your environment when you are speeding....
The cop didnt really need a radar to catch you, all he needs to do is follow you and estimate how fast you were going.

it's not worth fighting. most commissioners will be pissed off if you try to nail the cop with some sort of legal mumbo jumbo just to avoid the ticket. it's just an infraction. pay your fine and be happy it wasn't for 100+ mph or reckless driving misd. or fel. could have gone to jail, had your car impounded for up to thirty days (expensive) and a huge!! fine. that is the price we pay for driving fast.
FYI he doesn't have to show you a radar readout.

are you guys serious about not fighting it? i dunno about NY but in NC 25 over is reckless driving and your insurance will nearly double for 3-5 years. IMO its worth getting a lawyer to atleast try to get it reduced.

Maybe he'll print out your posting and take it with him to court. Stating how fast you knew you were going in a known low limit area just doesn't make since to me.
I don't want points either, that's why I don't double the speed limit when others are around.

tell you what...since you don't want to listen to clear reason....fight the ticket like you want. because you can fight it and win :/. then when you lose (and you probably will) post your findings up on this website so the next person who wants to fight a simple speeding ticket can learn from your mistakes.
oh...speed alone doesn't make it reckless. that combined with traffic, conditions, and driving style does. your insurance can't interpret a speeding ticket as a reckless driving ticket. they can, however, consider you a high risk driver because of number of points.

AFAIK, there's NO plea bargain in NYC area (Manhattan, Qns, Bkln, Bronx and S.I)The only way you can win a traffic ticket is
1) the cop make a mistake when he/she present the case in the court . 2) the cop does not show up but you need to have a nice judge to dismiss your case.
as for hiring a lawyer......i can't say it is waste of money but they cannot help you to win the case. What those lawyer do is they keep postpone the case, if the cop doesn't show up, they will try to ask the judge to dismiss the case.
I had a co-worker who hired a lawyer to fight his speeding ticket.......after almost a year and a half delay (keep postpone by the lawyer) he still gulity for the charge and need to pay the fine and points. But by that time, all his pervious points has been clear so he can keep his licsence.
Back to your case.....if you have a clear record, I will goto the court w/o hiring a lawyer and see what happen. If you lose the case just pay the fine + points and take one of those driving class which can reduce points.
good luck.

lawyers cost money, so do tickets. either way your out of some cash, so id fork over some more and see were you can get with a lawyer. be thankfull your not in more heat than you are. had a few serious tickets on bikes. you dont want to find yourself driving a 50cc aprilia.
