Smoke puffs outta the hood vent...

...about 30% of the time after i get off the fwy or when regular driving up hills, etc... Why is this? my hood vent has no guard on it so i can clearly see small amounts of smoke coming up from the engine for about 10secs and stops. I checked the coolant level about a week ago and the overflow tank was really low so i topped it off with Prestone coolant (didnt add water). But even with it toppd off, still does it occassionally after hwy driving, and im in CA where its pretty hot right now. Engine temp gauge shows no change in temp.

Any smell associated with it? Does it smell sweet?

If so, you probably have a coolant leak.. Check the lines to the turbo.

Its possible that it may be a valve cover gasket. Check around the valve cover for any seapage.

no never USE AC as it needs to be recharged so it hasnt been used for like 7 months+,

the smell isnt really sweet, i can slightly smell it, its not a strong smell like a burnt clutch or tires, its a very faint smell. Cant describe it but i'd say its a "regular" smell of smoke. Its not even strong as the smell of a cigarette.

I THINK i know what it might be, a while back i had to get a new oil return line and it didnt come with gaskets so i used a gasket maker silicone product and it might've not sealed it and when i check under the car sometimes, i see marks of oil on the oil return line, but not a heavy amount, it COULD be oil dripping on the dp, and causing it to smoke up, but i dont see why it only rarely does it and usually coming off the fwy :/ . No CEL or anything. possible exhaust leak? I installed a RMR dp a while back and it still has teh stock donut gasket on there

If it happens for 10 seconds after stopping, why not pop the hood and see where it is coming from?

What color is the smoke? I know someone that had a problem with the clamps holding on the turbo..the smoke he was seeing was oil being burned....

I'd put money on that.

check your coolant level after a spirited drive....I have seen high levels in the expansion tank after the owner has topped it off while being on the dyno even to the point of draining from the overflow.
The most likely sounds like the oil return line needs a gasket part # MR2258477
Hope this helps

thanks, funny thing is i changed the oil return line like 5 months ago and it never puffed any smoke until about a week 1/2 ago. As for coolant, it seems fine but im gonna drain and change it today. I do pop the hood and check, and all i know, its puffing inbetween the radiator/exh manifold and thats pretty much where the oil return line is so that could be it? Cant tell EXACTLY where teh smoke is coming from because its not really thick smoke.
