Some honest new owner observations...

So I've owned my Evo VIII for a few weeks now after trading in my '00 Audi A6 2.8Q for it. The Evo is my first Japanese car (had one Yamaha sportbike) in ten years of driving and I'm definitely likin' it.
This car is the replacement for my "family sedan/grocery getter" and I have to say I was a little iffy on straying away from Audi/BMW because they're such practical and nice-looking cars--quick on the highway as well. I was especially iffy of the Evo when I found out the back seats don't fold down because, afterall, this car has to be my workhorse when I buy things at the store. But then again, I only had to fold down the seats a couple times so I ended up overlooking that.

I needed AWD like the A4Q and 330xi, and the Evo has a good AWD system, so that was an important factor. The interior of the Evo is basic (the recaros are sweet though), unlike BMW and Audi, but I looked at it as there's less to go wrong. I ended up overlooking the interior just because it's such a great car under the skin. Not to mention the obvious ***-hauling factor... nice autocrosser, et cetera...

So anyway, my point is that after these first few weeks of trying something completely different to replace an A6 with, I'm happy as hell that I went with the Evo. I'm more impressed with it as time goes on. This car kicks *** in so many ways that just aren't understoof unless you know about them. It's just so versatile too... You can (if it were legal) blow pretty much any car away on the road, yet as long as you keep it under 4k RPM, no one can ever tell if they don't already know. It has manners if driven chill. Can't wait to mod the hell out of it in a little while, either. Want to do some more stuff to the 911 first though...

See you guys around...

I would sell the '93 Porsche 911 Carrera 2 and use that money to fund the tuning of the '04 EVO VIII.

LOL. Could never do that! The sound of the Porsche flat-6 screaming behind you, 40 years of history, et cetera... I'd really miss that. It's my #1.

I can't wait to get started on the Evo though. I'm just trying to learn more about them for a while first.

Congrats on the Evo!

I looked at many cars as well, but none of them could match the Evo in performance.

It may not have the fit and finish of the higher end cars, but the grin factor more than makes up for it.

Have fun!

Euromagination,

I am in complete agreement with you and actually did very similar to you. I traded in my 2000 Audi A6 4.2 Quattro for an 05' MR and couldn't be happier. I needed the versatility of 4-doors plus fun-factor. The audi was luxurious and a great highway cruiser but was heavier than a bloated whale and felt even worse when pushed in the twistys. The Evo was the answer and I don't regret it at all. I also have a 911 but a 95' and will never part with her. However, I recently removed some Porsche mods and cleaned out all the Porsche stuff just lying around my garage and came up with a modest amount of change that will be going into the Evo. Just ordered a Tanabe ultra medallion catback, JDM MR DV, Hallman MBC, SAFCII with harness, and some carbon fiber bling pieces for the engine bay. Can't wait to get them next week. I hope you have fun with your new rocket....er....family sedan!
