i wonder:

are you guys that're having problems with your hks intake -> hks kansai box using the HKS RS intake pipe or the HKS pipe that's a direct replacement for the stock intake? (much like the cusco unit)

DCD, just get the green HKS filter. that is the Kansai Service uses in their cars. i think the airbox was designed around either stock piping or their I/C piping kit. www.kansaiss.co.jp/

I just fitted mine...HKS racing suction + kansai airbox. It DOES require trimming...to put it mildly...had to cut away more than half of the side with the hole in it to get the box to fit. The hole it comes with is simply waaaay off where it has to be.

Also required a bit of fiddling and twisting of pipes to get everything lined up so the filter would sit nicely in the box.

Sounds horrible but although its definitely not what you'd expect given the price of the kit, once you resign yourself to trimming large chunks of carbon fibre off your new box it works very very well in the end.

After trimming and installing everything I sealed off as much of the gap in the side of the box with the hole as I could with a wall of duct tape and presto...fuctional and sexy - nobody will ever see the tape anyways.

After all the hassle, very happy with the result. Turbo seems to spool a little quicker and the car feels a bit more torquey as well.

Why anybody would ever mount a huge filter without an airbox is beyond me but at the same time the carbon is kindof blingy - would be just as effective in a composite plastic or something.

I have installed this box on my EVO VIII with the HKS RS Filter.

Yes, you heard it right HKS Racing Suction Filter.

You just have to cut away and inch of the rubber silicone hose that connects the HKS RS to the turbo.

I also heard horror stories of the box being broken due to wrong installation and frustration of it not fitting properly.
