2nd gear grind on an '05?

I have an '05 with 3500 miles on it. Ive noticed that when I shift very quickly from 1st into 2nd I will get a decent grind from the tranny. Now, this usually only happens the first time I shift hard, say, the first run at the strip or the first auto-x run. Subsequent runs done in a short period of time wont grind. Now, if I cruise around for 20-30 minutes and shift hard into 2nd it will usually grind again.

Does this have something to do with tranny fluid being 'cold'? Would switching to something like Redline help me out here?

no i think your timing is just off. I have seen people either pull the car out of 1St before they have the clutch all the way in. That will cause a grind. Or i have seen people push the clutch all the way in and then start to let it up before they get all the way into 2nd. This can be very common when trying to shift as fast as possible.

Caused by engine movement.

Nah, it's happening with the clutch fully depressed.

Mike, I'll check it out tomorrow. I have no grinds in any gear on the 6spd, even with powershifts, so if I can reproduce the 1-2 grind, then it's probably something to look into.

Alright. Im wondering if a fluid change would help it since it doesnt seem to do it after the tranny has been used rigorously.

YOu must have gotten a special EVO if you can powershift with no issues. I'm having issues normal shifting into gear at high rpms

not trying to highjack the thread, but i get it in 5th and only after driving for a half hour or so. or if i drive it real hard. the longer and harder i drive it, the lower the load, speed, and revs need to be to get the grind. fluid, or just the syncro?

Mike -

I've had my Evo for 15k miles now. Never once had a grind.

I do get an occaisonal "thunk" (1, 2 shift) coming from somewhere in the rear if I'm not smooth when releasing the clutch. This happens when I'm usually driving aggressively.

Yeah, I definitely got the 'thunk' the first few times I got on it. It reminded me of when the diff bolt in my M3 back itself out, bad noise.

Some of you guys getting the grind might be able to bring your clutch peddle out a little to help.

I got grind a couple of times between 1st and 2nd when I first got my evo -- but after the adjustment it's been perfect.

I have the 1-2 grind, too - on my '05 RS. I've gone through stock fluid, Redline, and BG Synchroshift trying to fix it. The BG works best, but it isn't fixed. And sorry, I don't accept that I don't know how to shift. I've been firing 1-2 shifts during autocross for ten years on Camaros, Corvettes, and Miatas, and I've never had a problem like this, never mind just trying to shift the !@#$% car on the street. It's frustrating as hell.

I credit the 6spd and the teflon cables. Plus, I only powershift the 2-3/3-4 and only at the track, but it works like a charm. No grinding in any gear ever so far despite lots of drag and auto-x racing.
