Sparco Evo Racing Shell - Initial Impression

I got the Sparco Evo, Evo-specific base and aluminum side mounts.

There's a bit of a problem that the holes in the base don't line up with the side mount holes, they're too far apart. My guess is that Sparco didn't intend for the base to be used with a race shell but Ben at RallySport Direct said the Sparco they have mocked up in their showroom lines up perfectly, so I'm not quite sure why mine didn't. No biggie, it's just a couple of holes that need to be drilled.

If you run into the problem I did, you can drill the base to accomodate the side mounts, but my guess is if you're over 6' tall, you're going to need sliders to get the seat back far enough. There isn't a lot of wiggle room in the base material to drill holes very far back.

Impressions on the seat: It looks just beautiful, and even though it's lightly padded it's quite comfortable. I'm 5'10"/175, and it fits me like a glove. If I ate one more DQ Blizzard it might be a little tight. I did a quick weigh on the bathroom scale (supposedly the scale is accurate to +- .5 lbs) and the Evo came in at 17.5 lbs, which is close the reported 18 pounds in the Sparco competition catalog, and no where near the 15 lbs reported in the Sparco tuner catalog.

I'm attaching a couple of really poor pics to illustrate the side mount/base issue, and I'll post up some good pics of the seat installed after I put it in tomorrow and any revelations once it's in the car.

Edit: trinydex post: https://www.evolutionm.net/forums/sh...d.php?t=112718

Not much good info on installing racing shells in these forums, and I didn't go with sliders, but it looks like a sliding competition seat is even a bit more difficult to install, at least if you go with Sparco.

i wrote a thing on this a long time ago... sparco uses their universal mounting base which tehy drill holes for side mount seats. bottomline is you either drill... or get adapter bars made to get your holes to get closer together.

Ok looking at your pictures There is one thing that catches my eye. In the Both picture you have the side mounts 180 degrees out of wack. You want them facing so the "Sparco made in italy" can be read with the seat attached to the base. That should fix your alignment issue.

I have a Prodrive(same as corsa)hooked up to a evo base(I know blasfamy) and it lines up perfect. If you need me to snap some pics let me know.

Ben

Yeah, snap some pics, I don't see how you can get it to line up without drilling.

If you look at the second pic, even if i use the holes that are closer together on the base, they're still too far apart to match the holes in the side mount.

RallySport Direct:

Do you have steel or aluminum sidemounts on the ones that fit correctly? I'm starting to think that the steel sidemounts might match up, but the aluminum ones don't.

It's tough to tell from these attached images whether there are any differences in the dimensions from the aluminum to steel side mounts.

The aluminum and steel side mounts are the exact same size and shape. So if the aluminums do not fit neither will the steels.

Here are some pictures of how it should be set up.

Hope this helps.

Yup, there's something weird with my setup, but that's cool. Actually, now I'm having a custom seat base fabbed next week. I want the seat lower, and need to move it about 1 - 1.5 inches forward, I'm pretty **** about seating position.

Thanks for all your help Ben!

sparco seat

anytime you mount a race seat you need to have mounts fabricated to adapt the side brackets to fit -- the "custom brackets" never work right and often when they do fit your seat is much higher than it should be. Go to a fab shop and for $100-200 they will make your seat fit correctly...and its the safest.

I am affraid that we are not understanding each other. Which is the trouble over the internet sometimes

From the pictures you posted you have the sidemount installed backwards.

You need to flip the sidemounts around like so

So the side mounts look like so

This will fix the problem of the holes on the base not lining up but it will not fix the problem with being to far back. You will need sliders or a custom base to fix that.

Hehe.. yeah sometimes typing into a text window isn't the most efficient form of communication.

I want the seat lower, and sliders would make it even higher so I'm going the custom base route, then I can get everything just where I want it. I'll flip the side mounts when I mount to the custom base since I can get the seat one hole lower on the side mount with it arranged correctly.

Thanks again for your help Ben!

Sparco Evo v.s. OEM Recaro

Well, you can kinda see the difference between the stock seat and the Sparco Evo in this pic. No real comparison between how these hold you.

Custom bracket is getting fabbed today, so I'll try and post some more pictures of the whole shootin' match.
