Tech Question on Cams

Ok my friend goes to a Tech school for mechanics and his teacher is saying if get 272 cams that i will need new valves or else the piston wont have enough clearance and hit the valves. I have never heard of getting valves is a requirement with getting 272 cams.

ok basically what his teacher is saying is that since the compression on the pistons are gonna change that the valves might punch the piston and that i need new valve SPRINGS. I still dont believe this and even if it was true, iknow the evo's stock motor can handle like 8000rpm revs. Can anyone explain this against what his teacher's saying. I've been trying to tell him that the piston's travel isnt gonna change cuz its still gonna be on the same crankshaft.

You will not need to change any other internal engine parts to run the 272 cams.
You can run the 280 cams as well. Some suggest that using a EVO VII set of springs will help, although HKS says it is not required. To answer the last question... Yes the cam changes both lift and duration. The 272 is the duration and the lift is 10.8mm(intake) and 10.2mm(exhaust).

I hope that helped.

So how exactly do cams change the compression ratio?

AHHH good question. It affects only dynamic compression ratio along with volumetric efficiency. It gets a little technical...
