can we officially put the weak clutch thing to rest

I must say that was my main concern a year ago when I started doing research on the evo. after 20,000 miles and the clutch feels as strong as mile 1! I've launched it hard 3-4 times and drive aggresive as hell every day. I also am seeing less and less posts on evom about clutchs going out. I guess it was just the 03's that got the bad clutchs.

It's all in the way you drive. 3-4 times launching on a stock clutch is totally doable without tearing the stocker up. I did around 100 hard launches before my stock clutch gave out.

I have a 04 as well...granted I don't have nearly as many as miles as you do (I'm only at 11k)..but hey I will agree with you, my clutch is grabbing like it did on day 1.

kinda pointless....****, the hard/expensive part is the labor. might as well put in something that will take a beating.

and 3-4 launches isn't anything....but i think its how you drive. I had 15k on my stocker with ATLEAST 60 hard launches and 280 miles on the road course....

Its the 5spd noobs that break their clutch....riding it all the time.

Coming from other forums...cars or motorcycles related there are always someone
complaining about the clutch. Don't know who to take serious anymore about
clutches.

the stock clutch is fine, i've turned all 4 wheels on a launch and never have i smelt burning or felt slipping. I agree that the noobs burn out the clutch due to their BAD driving.....ps my '03 clutch lasted 24,000 miles and i replaced it because of bigger horse power not b/c i burned it out

The clutch in the evo is still far to weak for the power/traction the car has. I replaced mine at 6,000 miles cause the dealer had the tranny out to replace a synchro. The new rps street disc works 10x better and holds the abuse a stock clutch should. The stocker didnt have much left on it, and I didnt abuse the car.

i think it depends on the power u are making... once i reached the 400 mark i had 40+ 1/4 miles runs with all 1.8 and less 60 foots and a few on the street.. also 24K on the car and just suddenly onc day started slipping not a big deal i expected it ... put in the ACT and u can totally tell the stocker was weak.. just my opinion

Agree, agree, agree

The stock clutch is a good one and the aftermarket ones are better. My personal feeling on this is that a lot of new and agressive drivers are getting evos. This car may be their first car or their first stick or their first high powered car. Therefore they are burning out clutches left and right.

I just bought an 03 evo with 11000 miles. It was already on its second clutch (the stock one and an Exedy Hyper single). I immediately had to put a new clutch in it. So 3 clutches in 11,000 miles. This has to be pure poor driving technique. I now hope to have the ACT in for a long, long time.
