Evo as second car
Evo as second car
Well with petrol prices rising the way that they are here in New Zealand, its gettting hard to justify having my Evo as a daily driver (60km round trip to work) but I couldn't give it up so I'm thinking of getting a second car to use during the week.
Many people here have second cars? What else dop you guys drive? I'm thinking somehting along the lines of a Honda Jazz. I want something small and easy to park, that my girlfriend can drive (shes not insured for the evo) but preferably with 4 doors. Anyone got any suggestions?

Honda jazz is a small 4 door hatchback, I guess you don't get it in america?
Fuel economy is a must for me in my second car I really don't care how fast it is.
The jazz does 4.6l/100km highway and 5.6l/100km city :O Thats 51mgp highway and 42 mpg city.
Its a 4 door, and its built on the civic platform. got a 1.3 in it. Heres a link if anyone is interested:

Thats my top pick at the moment, I was just wondering what else other recommend. We can't get the Dodge neon over here in New Zealand.

Me and my wife work opposite shifts, so I usually drive her car if i feel im racking up the miles on the Evo. She drives a '03 Jetta Gl. Its alright, but i wouldnt recommend it. Shes trading it in for a new acura TL, so I'm thinking about getting a current gen. Sentra SE-R. The used ones are selling really cheap, and they still pretty good mpg with a little performance.
I did the same thing. 73 mile round trip to work. I got a 98 Escort w/ 88K on the odometer for $1,700. I'm a financial planner, so I did the analysis of how much gas, depreciation, and wear and tear items (clutch, brakes, tires) I would save by driving the Escort to work 4 or 5 times a week.
Back when I did the analysis, gas was at 2.50, now its at 2.65. At the time, I'd save about $850 a year in gas, more than enough to offset the extra insurance. Add a set of new tires by the end of the year ~$850, extra set of brake pads ~$400, extra oil changes (4 per year vs. 6) ~$85. Evo is an expensive daily driver. As your gas is probably more expensive than here in the states, it will probably be an even bigger savings. BTW, don't worry about speed for a second car. Old sports cars are overpriced. Get an old import or other newer 4 cylinder and you'll thank yourself.
Then I did a analysis of the depreciation. Although it was difficult to put an exact dollar amount on putting extra mileage on the car, putting an extra 18K of highway driving in rush hour traffic will be far more than the $2K I spent on the car. The only problem is that since the evo is no longer my primary ride, i'm not afraid to start modding. There goes my plan on saving money.
