What is the rear wiper for?

The Evo 8 comes with a rear wiper, right? I'm wondering why?

First, no other sedans have them. Its a cool idea but I don't really see as that necessary. I have a sedan now and don't find that I would want a rear wiper. I have owned hatchbacks and even on those cars I'll use it maybe once a year or something (I live on east coast, not CA)

Second, the Evo went all out to save weight: aliminum parts, body panels, thinner glass, no inner trunk liner on trunk lid, hollow cams, magnesium valve cover, etc., but added a wiper that would get very limited use. Recall that the Acura Type R removed the rear wiper from their hatchback to save weight...

Anyone else notice this strange feature or is it just me?

Think about what this car can be and is used for. That's what the rear wiper is for

I currently have a 2001 Eclipse RS, no rear wiper. I can't stand not having one. Morning dew is about the most annoying thing ever.

Can't wait for my Evo!

Good observation (the type R lack one to save weight). The WRC does not have a rear wiper, why does the evo need one?

Yeah but it adds weight and price. If is worried about weight and price then they should have omitted the thing, and/or give it to us at a reduced price or have it as an option.

The 1997 model did not have one, subsequent years had them.

well...the reason why the WRC doesn't have a rear wiper...ummm because they are too conserned about whats in front of them than whats behind them and our evo's have them...hmmm maybe everyone who is getting a evo doesn't plan on turning it into a race car...me personally i'd love a rear wiper

i found it kind of amusing that some of those non-97 ITR owners went and removed and plugged their wiper holes to (almost) match their 97 brethren, i guess. my '00 had it, and i was pretty happy about it, for many of the reasons mentioned above.

although a hatch has quite the larger rear windscreen than a sedan...

but i'm happy about its inclusion on the evo.

if you talk to the designers at mitsubishi, the actual reason for the rear wiper is because 'the car tends to find its way offroad', thats right, aside from fighting due and typical street dust, they throw it on there for people taking the car through mud and snow, by the way, driving this car is like driving a race car, well not entirely, but it loves to accelerate, it handles like no other, and you can just tell inch to inch its performance designed, its even sweeter than i imagined.......

how much weight would taking off the rear wiper save anyways? if this many people are concerned, maybe should make this an option, :hint hint:
