did dealer drive my car needlessly?

I took my car in to have the oil temp guage repaired (needle doesn't move or do anything). I left my car for two days cuz they had to order a sensor. After the 2nd day, they said they replaced the sensor, but apparently it was the wrong part (for regular Lancer) and the guage still didn't work. I said I would pick up the car and bring it back when the correct part came in. Before I left the lot, I noticed the car had 8 extra miles on it. I asked the service advisor about it and he asked the tech. The tech told him he took the car out to "recalibrate" something. I only heard "recalibrate" cuz I was sorta annoyed and couldn't hear the rest of his explanation over the sound of the steam comin outta my ears. Well anyway, is there anything that needs to be "recalibrated" when they repair or replace the guages (oil temp guage in particular)? Or does it sound like the tech took it out for a joyride?

I would consider 8 miles for something like that acceptable, but I'm not sure if it is or not.

Curious, if it was, what would you actually do about it???

I dunno nuttin bout guage installs or repairs. Didn't know if it was reasonable or not, so I just said "okay" and went on my way.

8 miles is pretty far for something like that. dealer put like 4 miles on my car when they fixed my airbag harness which doesnt require driving anyways. just accept that they went for a joy ride and itll be ok.

If you took the car in for the oil temp sensor to be replaced/repaired, yes I would consider that to be excessive, there is no reason that car should of left the dealer lot at all for that repair,. I myself would be very unhappy to know my car was driven, possibly joy rided, when the car had no reason to be driven. When you take your car back let them know you specifically do not want the car driven without your permission first and note the mileage.

Kyle.

8 miles what did they do in it for 8 miles? you can tell in 1 mile if the guage is still not moving...

I used to work at honda. i was a tech their... this was when the s2000's first came out... all the other techs would love it when a customer would bring one in.. they would joy ride in them... and belive me it wasnt a cruise.. have you seen ferris buellers day off??? anyways... one day one of the techs totaled one of the cars on a back road.. this is why i hate taking my car to the dealer.

there is no need for 8 miles. all they need to do is turn the car on to see if the gauge is working. i would raise a bit of hell over this one. too bad you already left the lot. 8 miles and it still doesnt work? id be pissed even if i drove a camry

As stated above, there is no need for a test drive for the work you had done. You will know at start up or minutes after start up if the car is working properly. Id go back and ***** and try to get some free oil changes or something
