Test Drove EVO today

Today afterwork I went to SouthGate Mitsubishi to test drive an EVO, b/c of the 0% financing.

Anyway, I went in asking If I could test drive one, and then the salesman said I'd have to fill out a form so that they could do a credit check on me.
He also photo copied my license and took my SSN.

I had to wait around 45 minutes before they let me test drive it.

Is it customary to go through so much hassle?
I can understand that they want to see my drivers license ... but my SSN too?

This would be my first new car purchase, so I don't have any experience in this matter. Help!? Did I get treated differently, or is this SOP for ALL people who want to test drive an EVO???

It is not for all people, just mostly young adults. I had to do the same thing when I test drove a honda s2000.
Come in with your dad, and they'll let you test drive any car.

West Loop Mitsu in San Antonio doesn't let anybody test drive the new ones. they have one used one usually that you can test drive and you have to watch a video and get a credit check and all that jazz as well.

I've riden in the EVO before, so I know what the ride's like.

I just wanted to test steering response, clutch behaviour, and see how the stick feels.

Overall I'm impressed. I like the car.

Stick was a bit notchy though.
I presume that this will smooth out once it's broken in???

^no it wont, only gets worse when you have syncro grindage. search for short shifters, bushings, and a ss clutchline. they smooth it out.

I could be wrong on this, but I believe it may be illegal for them to perform a credit check, at least without your approval. Credit check do affect your credit rating, to many of them will drive it down. Next time try a different dealer, IMO.
