Safe to run evo at 12 psi on 87 octane?

Hey guys, just wanted to see what the consensus was on running 87 octane. Now before I get flamed, I want to put out there as an option for those evo owners who live in places where they are seeing $4-6 a gallon or those who drive alot! I saw someone post on a vishnu thread that running 87 octane, with the lowest mbc boost setting availible (12 psi) is safe. Any thoughts on this?

Just as a side note, when I want to be conservative on my wallet (I drive about 60K a year due to work) I can get 320 miles per tank (from the F to the E hash on the gas gauge) by: filling the front tires to 36 and the rear to 34 psi, staying out of boost, and shifting at 3K rpm. It takes me about $50 to fill up....I fill up about 4 times a week! My projected monthly gas usage is about $800 And thats if I be GOOD with the right foot!

Bobby

putting 87 in your Evo is not a good idea. I dont know how much you would save by using 87, dont you have another car you can use? If your spending that much money on gas per month I would suggest you get a beater or a bike. Or you can eat instant noodle until the gas price drops.

Yea, make other sacrafices on other things like food and non-essential things. I wouldnt put in anything less than 91 in. We have 93 here in MD, and you just have to "shop around" for good prices...

Pump 87 if u have to. In your situation, i would!! u'll get additional knock. So lower your boost all the way down, Avoid WOT Unless you really have to to avoid really high EGT's and you should be fine. Drive the car like an old lady.

Dr. Gray, RRE's tuner, over here in Socal currently has his car tuned at 87 octane. He's running 18 psi on that tune, but then again he's a tuning guru so he knows how to tune the car properly for that type of gas. If you do decide to run 87, make sure you have a tuner that knows how to set it up properly.

My buddy has his car tuned for 87 map as well, ala Dr. Gray

I dont think you will save any money w/ the 87 octane. Yeah it would cost less to fill up but your mpg will decrease. Me personally i think in the long run you would pay the same. Plus the risk of motor damage. I know how ya feal with the monthly gas bill, mine was about 250 a month, and now its it almost double.

funny cause race gas 100 oct. here in pa is still the same price 4.60 a gallon. i'm just going to start just putting that in. if prices keep going up then 100 will be right on level with 93. By the Way, dude just buy like a 1000$ civic hatch back.

I think it's possible to run 87 octane with some carefull tuning. Hell, our 91 octane **** gas here in California has been tested to 87-89 octane levels in the past. I have water injection, so I may have another map made up to boost up the 87 octane if these gas prices continue to soar. If you are a toulene user that will help kick up 87 octane. We have to adapt to this current gas situation.
