Need an Edumacation ...

Hey guys ... I'm looking to upgrade my 2005 Evo VIII to the Stage 1 package offered by Buschur. I noticed that they offer the S-AFC II as an option instead of getting the ECU flashed. Can you guys explain to me a little bit about what the differences would be?? Would getting the S-AFC II give me the same results as flashing my ECU, or would I be missing out an something?? And which would you guys reccommend I go with??

Thanks,
Nick

Well the flash will do a few more things than the AFC II can. First the flash will remove fuel cut, will raise the rev limiter, remove boost taper (i'm not sure if buschur's flash does that yet), and redo the fuel maps.

The AFC II will allow you to control how much fuel is added / removed at certain RPM points.

To answer your question, I would go for both the flash and the AFC II -- namely for the reasons i listed above.

I believe you have more flexibility with the AFC II than the flash -- you can change your fuel maps based upon mods and daily conditions. One important issue with the AFCII -- to tune properly you will need a wideband O2 sensor -- this way you can properly read AFR's. You can tune with narrowband (see Warrtalon for assistance on this) but it's not as precise.

Others may disagree -- I personally only have the AFC II and I am content.

Somewhere down the road I'm looking to get the ECU+ for tuning purposes since it is more robust.

If you are a bit of a tuning idiot (like me) just go with the flash. The SAFC can be used to fine tune on top of the flash. But, I am very happy with the flashes (2 now) and personally don't feel the need for the SAFC in my application.

Hi Nick,

the ideal option would be to get both which will enable you to get a great setup from the flash but also make small tweeks on your own. to be honest with you, it all depends on how you are. the flash is great if you don't plan to mod anytime soon or already have the mods. another advantage of the flash is that it is able to change all paramters of the stock ecu (except for boost but it ccan prevent taper). the s-afc on the other hand is a user operated device which can control some of the paramters but it is up to you on how you use it. if you do get the flash, you will not bbe able to chnage it on your own but the good thing is that you will get a professional tune which will make your ride alot more fun.

my advice would be to get a flash instead of the s-afc and if you feel that later on you are ready to tune yourself or need soemthing stronger, get the aem stand alone.

I'm pretty sure they send you the SAFC tuned already for the mods if you go with that option, but each car reacts slightly differently, so it's not optimal... but then again neither is the mail-in "off the shelf" flash. I have a custom flash (for roughly stage IV) plus the SAFC to fine tune for racegas, etc. The flash alone is great with the Buschur stages, and they've done enough to really know what works.

Bottom line: if you're looking to "set it and forget it", go with the flash. It has a lot of value added benefits too (rev limit, timing control, etc...) but you can't change it without getting another flash, and you have to send in your ECU or wait for the tuner to come to your town.
