Tips for making a deal over the phone?

I'm looking to get an evo from a dealership about 6 hours away, any tips on making the deal over the phone? to ensure that I get what they represent on the phone? I.e. can I ask them to fax me the price in writing, etc.........

Thanks

find the price the dealer paid for the car on edmunds.com. call the dealer and tell them you know what they paid and you are willing to pay $1k over and all they have to do is fill out the paperwork. make the deal clear over the phone and be sure they understand that if it changes by the time you get there you will walk away.

fax is exactly what I was thinking... and if you go there and they don't honor it, you could at least go to a diff dealership and tell them "hey, this is what ______ dealership is willing to sell me the evo for. Can you beat/match this?"

the only guys from a dealership you might be able to trust from one minute to the next is the internet/fleet sales.
at least that has been my experience. unless you like to haggle

speak directly w/ the sales manager(I used to be one). tell them exactly what you want and what you are willing to pay. Just don't assume that you are getting a great deal at 3k under (unless you're paying cash) because they will get it back on the back end. Trust me this business is not about losing money, its about making tons of it.

It's VERY difficult to make a deal over the phone. Probably the best you could do is fax them your offer, and offers that you have received from other dealerships. Your best ammunition is being able to turn around and walk out of the dealership, and you're not going to have that. There's nothing more that a GM of a dealership likes to see than someone walk out on a member of his sales staff.

I wish you the best, and make sure you get a good deal.
