these cars will always be on par with each other, u can't go wrong with either choice. now, what i REALLY wanna see is next year's WRC. peugeot and citroen won't participate, so that means it'll be back to EVO vs STI again, with maybe toyota and porsche coming back! i just hope mitsu makes a faster rally car, it just hasn't been the same after evo5-6. Gigi Galli is an awesome driver, so is Rovanpera. the more the 2 manufacturers compete, the better it is for us, as we get to take advantage of all the R&D. it was kinda sad to see on some subbie boards ppl saying "yay, mitsu is going down the drain HA!". what an ignorant statement. with mitsu gone (which it won't be), subaru looses a potent competitor in its street car and rally market, which means it might not be as aggressive with its products. competition keeps both companies on the edge and benefits us, tunaZZZ
Yeah I read that article and I was very surprised they picked the STi. It seemed when reading the article that the EVO had it in the bag, but I guess not. Regardless I think the more impressive thing about the IX is the way that it is taking modifications. I've always thought as far as stock vs. stock, the STi and EVO were pretty much neck to neck, but when you throw on aftermarket modifications, the EVO just has been the better and cheaper car to tune. Now the IX is seeming to take it to another level and further increase the gap between the two cars when it comes to aftermarket mods.

wow, subbie's taking matters into their own hands. congrats on the new Sti with its improved performance (esp handling deparment). since i aint modding my Evo (cuz i think it's a sin to mod an art like the EVo....FOR NOW hehe)....for me it's down to looks for the 06 Evo and Sti...and in that department, the Evo wins by a mile. just IMO though.

Yeah that's why if I ever got a 8 i would get SSL, but you can't with the STI if I remember. The evo 9 interior rocks

I will say that the IX MR we were had for this test was a pre-production vehicle and HAD the 5,000-rpm limiter. I've read here and on www.socalevo.net that owners are saying they don't have that limiter on their production units. That could explain the difference because an Evo without that limiter would certainly be able to run a better number.
Plus we usually make 3 to 5 runs and move on to the next vehicle we need to test. Think about that for a second. How many of you could get in a vehicle you've never been in before and run competitive numbers within 3 to 5 passes? Oh and then you have to do the same on the slalom, skidpad and figure-8 tests. Seriously, not many have those skills. Some could possibly be good a one test or another but not be well rounded enough to do them all well and then be able to put it into words and write about it.
Anyway thanks to those of you who understand that these two vehicles are very close in performance and the final decision came down to the one thing that wasn't very close.

i guess that answers my question!

Chris Walton, the Senior Road Test editor does 90% of the testing and was the shoe for this story. He tests somewhere around 300 vehicles per year, so he knows how to test. We run best number we record corrected for atmospheric conditions. That's it. Pretty simple really.
