Evo owners - I need your help.

As some of you already know, I was in an accident this past Friday night that was (as all the factors indicate) caused by the Advans failing to grip in weather below 40. A few of you posted in the thread that this has happened to you as well, so here's what I'm asking.

Progressive is still investigating the cause, and when I told them that this had happened to other members here, they said that if I could get some names and numbers, they would have a much better shot at seeing if the liability may lay with the tires not performing to certain standards.

If you own an Evo and have ever had the tail slide, or even more (180) in reasonable driving conditions but cold temperatures and not under excess speed, would you please PM me you name and email address or phone number. I don't know if Progressive will go so far as to contact you, but the list will certainly help. If you need a backgound of what happened, please read this thread first - https://www.evolutionm.net/forums/sh...6&page=1&pp=10

If you read this thread but can't help, please bump it for me. I appreciate it.

Oh, and the damage estimate was just under 5K. This is not a cheap car to fix.

You are aware that when you buy the car there's a big warning sticker about not using the tires in cold weather right? I'd consider 8 degrees above freezing to be cold weather.

*Edit* Before I get flamed to death or *****ed out about this post, i'm not trying to be a jerk here. I'm simply saying that the Mitsu warns the tires are summer only, so it's going to be VERY difficult to make someone else liable for the damages.

I hate to be one of those contrarians, and I'm sorry you had the accident. But...... The Advans are definitely not a cold weather tire. They are phenomenal in the warm, dry pavement but they suck in the cold, specially if it's damp outside. I had the tail break away with those tires very easily after they wear a bit in cold weather. Still, I'd not blame the tires. They are clearly not designed for that kind of use.

HOLY crap people tell this junk to people who ride motorcycles not the ones that drive EVOs the faction is a warning that till the tires warm up under load they will not grip in ordinance to regular allseason tires standards,,the crappy summer tires should have never have been used to begin with by mitsu hell look at subaru they use the pilot or bridgestone multi tires on their cars,,on a 96 degree day here with the advans i could swing the tail till the tires heat up basicly the tires are made of a temp based compound that is hard as leather when cold

People lets not let this turn into a discussion of what he should have done or should have known. The poor guy crashed his car don't rub salt in the wound. If you don't have any info to help him don't post or just bump it if you want to help his cause.

i understand that the tire are not all season tires, and they were to be replaced by the middle of next month. i understand the warning that mitsubishi puts on their car.

that said, any tires equipped as OEM on any car have to meet certain DOT safety minimums. you simply cannot sell a car in the winter that tires instantly make it unsafe to drive. how many evo owners recommend driving on the stockers in winter? i've yet to hear even one.

even still, we aren't talking about winter. we aren't even talking about bad weather. it was a crisp dry night which became a colder dry night by the time i was driving home. for the tires to let go completely as they did (see the photo in the thread) is just plain dangerous. putting a sticker in the car that says they "recommend" changing the tires does not remove all responsibility.

i'm not going for a lawsuit here, i'm not even looking to save my deductible , i just don't want my insurance to skyrocket because i was held liable for something that wasn't my fault.

thank you. if you want to razz me for what happened, read the thread on that first, then post your opinions there. too many people are so damn quick to judge before even hearing the situation. i wish they were in the car with me when it happened.

Your welcome. Lately EvoM has become a group of geniuses that never make mistakes and love to tell everyone else what they are doing wrong and all of them know the best way to do things. It's just getting really old. Don't get me wrong I have my moments of pig headed stubbornness but, some people on here just seem not to be able to communicate with out being confrontational. Not necessarily anyone in this thread just the forum in general.

agreed. what ever happened to benefit of the doubt, especially for other forum members? i didn't ask anyone to lie or cover for me, i just asked if anyone else had a similar situation offer to say, yes, that happened to me.

its sad man. the good ones are getting more and more rare here.

Good luck man, but I think this is just your insurer grasping at straws. They have lawyers working for them looking for loopholes exactly like this. Thing is the OEM Advans come with a disclaimer.

While I totaly sympathize with the guy who's car is crashed and really feel his pain . . . .

I don;t like the way this post sounds - it sounds like Progressive wants to go after either and or Advan or both to get some $$ which is not going to help anyone here unless you are a Progrssive share holder or a lawyer working for them

obviously Progressive is trying to work an angle here to try and recover some $ from on the theory that the tires are unsafe - some type of products liability issue - - if Progressive has paid off 300 wrecked evos to date it would be a huge claim

i dont see how cooperating with progressive will help the evo owner at all - it seems he has no injury lucily and they are fixing your car

I agree that the warning sticker is there for a resaon and it pains me to think that the end result of situations like this is that they wont even be able to sell a car with summer compound performance tires on it

It would be a bad day for us all if stopped selling the evo becuase of law suits - not to mention if chevy stopped selling the Z-06 or Dodge the Viper

I say LEAVE alone - they are having a hard enough time just to survive

the tires are great tires - there is a warning sticker that comes when you guy the car - I dont know what else they could do to prevent this kind of condition expect install all season tires on the cars which no one wants I hope
