I have a question about Salvage title.

Is the definition of salvage title in every state is different?

I read on the michigan.gov, and it says that "A vehicle with a salvage title cannot be plated or used on public roads until it is recertified by a specially trained police officer and retitled."
After it's passed the inspection, it will be called REBUILD title.

I just don't get it, so a car with salvage title can't be used?
I live in Texas though.

So let say that someone is selling their car with a salvage title, and I buy it from him, then I can't drive the car legally?

It depends. Sometimes a title can be "cleaned" by simply crossing state lines.

Depends what happened to the car, as to what you will have to do to get it titled again. I've owned a truck that had a salvaged title. It was wrecked and I think the frame got bent but the person fixed it and got it retitled. More than likly it got totaled by the insurance company so it gets a salvaged title. So yes you can get it retitled, it just must be inspected first.

How much is the cost to get it re-titled?
Is it too much hassle?
So salvage is the same as total loss or totalled?
But it thought if it's totalled, then the car is owned by the insurance co. and not the original owner anymore?
Hmm ... somehow i make myself more confused.
A salvage title is placed to a car with a damage more than 75% and less than 95% wether it's fixed or not?
I'm sorry, I'm kinda lost.

If it already has a salvage title then you can register and drive it. The salvage title means that the car was wrecked at some point, and the cost to fix it was more than the cost of a replacement car per the insurance company, and the owner fixed it anyway. My buddy had a car that got totalled (insurance company said it was worth $2500, it would cost 2700 to fix). We bought it back from the insurance company, fixed it in my garage for about $1000, then had to get a salvage title by dealing with the DMV ad nauseum.

Keep in mind that in a future accident, the insurance company of the responsible party may claim that because of the salvage title the car is worth almost nothing.
You may not be able to get collision coverage for the car, only liability, so you can't get a loan to buy it.
Otherwise all the work is done, all you have to do is register and drive it.

some people buy the car back from the insurance company at a cheap price to part out or even fix, if it's worth it.

but the new title will say rebuild to let the potential buyer know that there was a major problem with the car, from what i understand of it.

Let say I have full coverage insurance, and I get into another accident, then I can't get the coverage for my car?
So it's useless to have a full coverage insurance on a salvage title car?
OMG, sorry if I ask you with these silly questions.

From what I know, even though you already fix the car, you still get salvage title, but you say that it will be rebuilt on the title.
From what I undestand so far is that :
salvage : if the car cost to fix is more than the value of the car.
rebuilt : already fixed and pass the inspection

is that correct?

but then, what is the difference between rebuilt and salvage?

Be sure to ask your insurance company if they even insure salvage title vehicles. Some don't.

Salvage = When the insurance company buys your car after the car is involved in an accident, stolen, etc. and resells it
A car with minor parts stolen can be savlaged such as headlights, wheels, windows smashed.
The cost to repair the car varies depending on how much damage is done.
My mom drives a salvaged accord, so yes you can drive salvaged cars.
This is according to my dad (car dealer) and he deals with salvaged cars everyday.

like silverlining said, some insurance co. won't insure a salvage title car.
what is ur mom insurance coverage? full or liability?
thanks

oh wait, when you have a salvage title car, do you have to make it rebuilt title for a better reason?

My Focus was damaged by hail and the insurance company decided it was totalled. I bought it back for a reasonable price and did not fix the damage. I have been driving the car since and did not have to do anything with the title. That is Wisconsin though.
