Yes, its the crush washer for the drain plug to replace the old one.. And fill the filter with fresh oil, then apply some to the gasket to keep it from sticking..

Is this a necessary step? I have seen many oil changes and they dont do that. If it is needed how much oil do you put inside, half the filter?

filling the filter is not an absolute necessity. It's a good practice, but since this will be your first oil change, I'd try to keep it as simple as possible.

The crush washer goes on your drain plug. Remember to take the old crush washer off and install the new one. You should only have 1 crush washer on the drain plug.

A few more tips: make sure the car has had plenty of time to cool. You don't want to be doing this with hot oil, especially the first time. Make sure the car is level so that you can drain all the oil. Don't overtighten the drain plug bolt, I don't know the exact torque spec., but it should be somewhere around 35#'s. After you have changed the oil, run the car for a couple of minutes to fill the new filter with oil. Then check your oil level one final time.

thanks have been changing the oil in my bikes and cars ever since to save money, just never put oil inside the filter

I recently saw the under side of an evo and boy is the filter in a convenient place, in my last car I would end up burning my hand cause the header was in the way.

thanks
