Reliability

I am right in the middle of the EVO IX vs. 06 STI. I like of the EVO (interior and exterior) more than the STI. My biggest concern is reliability and service. I will be using the car as a daily driver, autox'er and track car.

Can someone please give me an opinion on the relability and service quality of
Mitsubishi?

Thanks

It's not that great. In fact, it's the biggest downside of the Evo.

If you want to race, though, the Evo is your best bet for drag, auto-x, and road racing. I do all 3 with much success and few mods.

Some dealerships look the other way, some wont warranty anything if you change your cigarette lighter! Shop around for a "friendly" dealership. I did.

You should know that if Mitsu finds out you are racing your warranty is toast. Subaru is not as extreme with their warranty policy. Sti has a stronger tranny and clutch from the factory. If you have experience racing you probably already know that something will break if you push the car to the limit often. I do some spirited driving but never burn the clutch and my 03 has almost 40 k trouble free miles.

IMO if you race your car you should not expect warranty work. I'm not trying to say that you shouldn't try to get it, but let's be realistic...

IF you don't break it, YOU ARE NOT GOING FAST ENOUGH!

I don't plan on alot of track days maybe one a month from April to November. I also will not push a 30K car past limit because I cannot afford a crash......so I guess I want the car to last. Sure I will have to get new tires but without any violent launches I just want a car that will last and not fall to pieces.

You are obviously pretty concerned about warranty. Get the STi. But remember, what you save in warranty, you may spend extra in mods. If you dont plan to really mod, get the STi. Good luck

I used to have an STi and believe me they will deny warranty work just as fast as Mistu.

I owned a STI as well and had my entire warranty voided for abuse when I brought it in stock to get a blown axle fixed. Go with the EVO for sure. It all depends on the dealer in the end as far as warranty goes.

Like somebody already said, if you race the car you are going to put a lot more stress on it and if it fails they might deny warranty regardless of it's the EVO or the STi... I found my EVOs to be quite reliable specially considering how extensive the modifications to my '03 EVO... Sure I had problems but they were caused by incompetent, cocky, overconfident "tuners" BTW, the dealer I went to with some of these "problems" helped me out a lot with warranty work so much for the horrible customer service.....
My MR is basically stock and it has not given me any problems and I expect it will remain trouble free (no hacks will be allowed to screw with it)

I am also really concerned about the reliability, If I do not plan on launching hard and revving it really hard all the time, what has your experience been, to those who havn't done this, with thigns going wrong on the car? Cause this would be a big envestment so I have to make sure that i won't have to pay for maintanance all the time.

I really haven't had any problems with reliability. My car has 25k miles now and I've been to the strip lot's of times and everything is fine. I replaced my clutch at 20k miles just because the power was starting to get a little to much for it and I wanted to get something else in there. Tires go fast though so make sure you have extra money laying around.
