Flying out tomorrow to pick up my new IX MR...

Need advice please!!!!

I'm flying out of town tomorrow to pick up my new car!

Really excited and as I'm making a check list for everything for my flight tomorrow, I thought about the break-in process. Everyone says no extended highway driving, vary rpm's. It's about 600 miles. How am I suppose to keep the rpm's varied? Doesn't the manual say no extended highway driving during break-in? What kind of problems with that cause the engine? I'm really concerned about reliability and longevity. I was so excited to find the vehicle, I booked the plane ticket the same day. Now, I'm worried about what kind of long term affects I'll cause the engine by driving it back...

Any advice???

Drive it normal... dont rev past 3000rpm. 1000 miles. Take car of it the first 1000miles and it will take care of you for the of its life.

Funny....My friends told me not to go on grocery runs back and forth and GO highway driving. Guess the manual wants you to drive thru LA. ;p There's a lot of variations in RPM. haha.

I use this every time I get a new car... which is often. Seems my cars run strong every time.

i've broken in every engine I have owned under this method (including the cossie race motor) and I've never had a problem with blowby or bearings. I have 21k on my MR now and I havent' used any oil between changes, and I run the car hard every day on my drives. I also had the oil in the evo analyzed last time and it came back as "no problems".

Will the extended highway driving (600 miles) prevent the engine from being broken in properly? I've always been taught not to do long extended highway driving while breaking in???
I plan to very the rpm's as much as possible, but between trying to keep the rpm's low and being the highway, that's like 55-65 mph.

That article is... interesting. I've never heard of that process.

But doesn't the manual say to keep it easy the first 600 miles?

Even if I tried the more aggressive method, do I just get on it within the first 20-30 miles? Will the additional 500+ miles of highway driving back cause any ill effects?

Thanks everyone. This great community was also a big reason of why I chose the car!

Does this apply to automobile engines?

I drove my brand new "03" 500 miles from the dealership (Georgia to Florida) home. Went the speed limit the whole way never going above 4000 rpm. I went ahead and drove it another 500 miles once I got it home just to be sure. No problems for me!

modern bike engines and the 4G63 in the evo are very similar, with the exception of the 4G63 being an Iron block and 2.0 ltr displacement. The inline 4 of a 1 liter sport bike is mechanically similar to the 4G63 less the forced induction.

this topic of break in proceedure has been beaten to death on here with strong advocates on both sides: (break in easy by the book and break in hard). Use you're best judgment about how you want to break it in; however, I can say from experience that I've never had a problem with a motor i've done a hard break in on, including some motors that have logged over 200k miles. (2.4l twin cam chevy that I beat the absolute **** out of after breakin per the above method).

head = hard breakin

tails = soft

Just drive it normally, keep your RPMs varied a bit. Manuel says max rpms 6000. I ran mine all over the board, but below 6K rpms. I ran it "***** to the wall" up to 5k then ran it mellow for 15 minutes, then hard again. Mitsu didn't build a delicate piece of crap that can get messed up so easily Your worrying more than you should. I changed my oil @ 600 mi w/ Royal Purple and will do my 2nd oil change @ 3K.
You're going to love your car!!!!!
