They hide it. May be they don't wanna look bad, if they got raped on a race.

Here in CA, we have every reason to. The time and money wasted on getting pulled over by an overzealous cop and being written up for something shiny under the hood is a pain. And then the time and money wasted going to the referee just to find out that your EVO is emmisions compliant is just more to add to the misery.

There's nothing wrong with being proud about the mods you have done to your car, it's just people like me trying to avoid the hassle while enjoying to fruits of my labor.

Yes, here in Cali it is muy bad to have what looks like a modified engine...even an intercooler pipe can result in a ticket.

it's just like business: underpromise & over perform. You get into trouble when you overpromise and underperform, which is what a super showy car is (on the street, at least). In other words, if it looks fast, it had better be faster!

That's pretty unbelievable. I guess we just see that in the movies, but I never thought the cops were really that crooked. What justification do they have to harrass you based on how shiney your engine bay is? That's some infuriating sh*t right there. All the a-holes out there raping and killing, and cops are wasting time and money chasing after bling.

which is probably the only reason why the EVO caught on to the market to begin with. How many people do you think knew about the EVO's existance prior to that movie? It's kind of shame that it takes something like that to justify people spending 30K on an import. A mitsubishi no less.

the real shame is that those of us who have followed the Evo heritage since the early 90s and who have built up DSMs in the hopes of being like an Evo now have to deal with the terrible influx of riceboys from the Honda world because of 2F2F. Can you imagine how awesome this community would be if none of them every noticed while old-school DSM'rs rule the roost in anonymity while racing like fiends with grins from ear to ear? That's how I always envisioned the arrival of the Evo in the US, but unfortunately, we got infiltrated by the enemy.

The state makes money off of sending cars to get inspections and issuing tickets for modifications. Which is easier and more financially beneficial? Pulling over a modified car and giving him a few hundred $$ worth of tickets for mods or chasing a criminal and possibly shot?

It also looks good for them as they are cracking down on street racing and saving lives. Of course all modified cars have to be street racers, right?

i can see where your coming from. the only reason i want the keep my car looking stock is because when i do race, i want people to think im a stock Evo, so I can turn some heads when I do floor it.

for the engine bay, however, I don't really give a hoot. if I'm in the position of popping my hood, then i want them to be like "woh! i thought this was stock!"

I totally agree. To think that I've waited 10 years for this car to make it stateside. I've had my fair share subsituting it building my 1G and my 2G. And now that it's here, I'm fulfilling my dream of owning one. It disheartens me to see spoiled high school kids running around EVO's with the holier than god attitude drawing unwanted attention to the EVO.

Anyway, to support the statement about revenue generating tickets vice chasing the "real" bad guys. I'm my time of old school DSM days, I've gone through the hassle of getting pulled over 3 times in a 1 hour period all for a shiny muffler hanging out back. And two out of those three officers gave me fix-it tickets. Mind you I wasn't doing anything but trying to get home after working a late shift. But it doesn't help being profiled as a racer because I'm asian and drive an import. (a common thing here is CA) So that's exactly the kind of hassle I'm trying to avoid.

I don't get the impression that it's for warranty work, and most mechanics are going to spot aftermarket stuff anyway when they start digging around. They/y'all seem to be proud of it and like to "show off" the engine bay, but how often do you really hear someone say that a stock engine bay looks good?
You obviouslt don't live in so cal.

There are two main group of people oriented into the modding/tunning world. There are some that are all about showing off, the loud BOV, the bunch of stickers, the bunch of gauges with indiglo illumination and off course the color code on the engine bay(red air filter, red sparkplug wires, red oil cap,red strut bar, redcoating on the headers, red radiators hoses, etc, etc)

On the other hand, there are people that like to go fast and be 100% unnoticed, no loud BOV, discrete and hidden gauges, reposition of parts away from view(MBC, different kind of controllers, etc)

I think that unless you are a vendor and sponsor then yes, show it all, but if you like not to call the attention of cops and thefts then hide it all..

Mods that rock and can't see:

Reflash
Cams
fuel pump
stock turbo internals upgrade(ti-al wheels) bore out to a 20G
well hidden MBC
Upgrade Downpipe with the Works stealth stock mufller
Air filter drop
Lower Intercooler pipe

With the mods mentioned above the dealer would have hard time visually spotting the mods.
