Best Cams for BR 9-20G & EVO VIII
Best Cams for BR 9-20G & EVO VIII
just got done reading a bunch of threads regarding cams, including this one.
https://www.evolutionm.net/forums/sh...d.php?t=105355, and have the following to say/ask.
keeping it simple, i gather that taking the most advantage of your cams depends on knowing/guestimating how much air your head will flow. now it appears to me that most evom members tend choose the largest cam possible, in the hopes of getting maximum gains (be it up top, torque or whatever combination of both), while still keeping a sensible idle. HKS cams seem to be a popular choice as even their most aggressive street cam (280) have a conservative lift.
i'm hoping to be a little more thoughtful in my selection, as i would like to take advantage of any tq and te to be gained by running a more agressive cam. considering that this turbo will be flowing more air than stock then it may be possible to get more gains running cams with a higher lift than HKS.
below are my two questions for you guys.
1.) what are the best set of cams for the BR 9-20G
2.) will there be any benefit to porting the head for this turbo? (i.e. is the stock VIII head the flow limiting factor in this case, and can a more aggressive cam be run after porting for larger gains)
I know Buschur posted dyno results for this turbo on his ported 2.3L stroker, but this setup could definitely flow more air than 9-20G could deliver and cams weren't covered..so i believe this is still a relevant question as it applies to 2.0L and stock VIII head.
Doesn't the IX have a head that flows more? This might be an indication of gains to be made by porting the VIII's head.
thanks in advance

while i do appreciate your answer, what is the reason behind choosing 280's vs 272's or a tomei 260 pro with 11.5mm of lift. yes i know i can see gains with cams, but there must be a best choice given this turbo and a stock head or a ported head if valid.
did you even read my entire post?
thanks
answers appreciated.. answers with justifications even better.

Forget the turbocharger for making up your mind on what cam to run.
The HKS cams from what I have tested all make very close to if not the same low end power. Up top each larger cam makes larger power.
Now, the reason I said forget about the turbo is you will need to worry about what you put up with for drivability more. The 264's will run like stock. The 264/272 combo works really well too. Once you go to the 272's and run a re-flash the idle can get a little bit more choppy but still idles decent enough to drive daily. The 280's are pretty aggressive. Al just made a major break through in the reflash and they may not be an issue at all anymore. Up until last week the idle with the 280's sucked in my opinion. IF you can tune or have someone that can tune a standalone (AEM EMS, HKS V PRo or Power FC for example) the idle with any of them should be great.
Next tuning trip to Ohio for Al is beginnning of February. We will be testing this new flash on a car here equipped with 280's. Hoping for a fix that I'm not aware of anyone else having.

Ive learned a long time ago not to argue with professionals. Dave Buschur just happents to e the guy I would be argueing with.
However, specs on paper and results Ive seen, I like the Tomei Pon's for the street and the 280dur for no holds barred. 11.5mm lift is beautiful....and Comp also makes som nice sets. Just the same...HKS has the single biggest backing anywhere. You wont have trouble finding a tuner.

You aren't argueing with me feldguy! haha
You could very well be right about the high lift cam. Many companies offer them, Jun, Tomei, Revolver, Crane etc.
I am going to be testing a set here very soon. I may change my mind on them too.
I will be posting the testing when I do it, don't worry.
The 272's are great for an all around driver and the 20G.
Al tells me he has the big cams and big injectors working like a charm with the flash, so I could be wrong. IF that's the case use the 280's.

I say the 280's. Had a 2003 do the hotside and just tuned on meth. His car is able to hold 26.8psi at 7700rpms on the 272's which I found impressive. Just imagine the 20g9 CFM's and I would guess the car could hold similar boost on 280's. I can only hold 24psi @ 8000rpms on a cool night with the 2005 MR.
