Clutch

Well my car is at 2600 miles and my stock clutch went out. its down at the dealer and tomorro hes going to take it apart and look at it to see if i wore it down. I belive the dealer is going to say that they wont warrentee the clutch and that ill have to put a new one in. i told the guy that there could be a recall on these stock clutches, cause who wants a car where you have to worry about a clutch going out every year or so and having to spend 1000 dollers just to replace. i told the guy if i have to put a new one in i want to put a n aftermarket clutch in, he said he will see if he can but i did talk to another guy and he said if i did it would void my warentee on my car. but anyways the guys there dont really belive me that alot of people are complaining about the stock clutches and a good percentage of them are going out before 10000 miles witch is horrible. could they void my warentee even if i have them install a clutch and maybe a new fly wheel? Im only doing minor mods to my car and i need a clutch that is smooth for around 300 hp and i need help on whitch clutch to buy and fly wheel while were at it. Maybe we should start a recall on the stock clutches? just checkin for your guys responses. thanks

No, there's no recall and there doesn't need to be one. If yours went out at 2600 miles, then it's because you don't know how to drive, you abused it, or it's defective. If they take it apart and find that it's not worn but rather it's defective, then it will be covered under warranty. Just let them install a brand new STOCK clutch with a new STOCK flywheel and call it a day. The stocker can last you many miles. It is not common for stock clutches to go out in less than 10k miles. That only happens to people who screw up, and by the way, I'm including myself. Mine went out at 7500 miles just moments after winning an Import Bracket Race where I had to do 12 drag runs in a short amount of time. I won, but then immediately noticed my clutch was slipping - my fault.

Yes, they can do what they want with your warranty if you have them install an aftermarket clutch and flywheel, but only in relation to the drivetrain, not the whole warranty.

Ya same here, ohh mine slips every gear and i have to rev it almost 5000 just to get it going. i mean i dont trust the stock clutch so if i have to pay for another clutch i wont go stock again and have to worrie about replacing it again.

Wow, don't know what to say besides asking you to practice more. Not sure if it is your first stick car, but this car requires some skill to launch it well (launching = regular street driving from a stop).

If it is at least your second stick car, you should not be toasting it at this mileage or the clutch is really defective as Warrtalon said above.

I valet park and i can drive a carrara gt smoother then the evo. i think it might be a defect because i drove a sti last night and it was simple, its definantly not driving error. ill admit id did burn the clutch a few times and i did quick launch it alot but i brought it to 4000 rpms and slipped it a little, i never burned it during launches, and i dont smell the clutch either. plain simple that evo clutches are weak and they should have made them stronger. you dont hear of the wrxs clutches going out before 5000 miles, thats un heard of . there was a poll on here a bit ago and a big pecentage of peoples clutches have been going out before 5000, 10000, and 15000 miles.

No, not a big percentage. It's just that you only hear from the ones who complain about their clutch going out early. Most don't have any problems. Yes, the clutch is made to be weaker than the tranny so that if something breaks, it's the clutch and not something in the drivetrain. Also, though it's somewhat weaker than other clutches, it's plenty strong to handle 100k miles even on a modded Evo (ask redcloud).

no they cannot void the warentee, because of the clutch that you put in it. you can put any clutch you want in there. and they cant do ****. so go nuts.

My 03 comes with a "Others" warranty located on page 5 of the warranty and maintenance manual.

Straight out of the manual,

"The following factory installed items are covered under warranty for 12 months or 12,000 odometer miles, whichever occurs first (excluding normal wear and tear).
- Brakes (Pads, Linings, Shoes)
- Wiper Blades
-Clutch Disc

So the question is, do all EVO's have this warranty or just the 03's? Secondly, did your clutch go out due to normal wear and tear or defect? That's the question Mitsu will ask when deciding warranty claims. If you honestly think it's a defect and not your "normal wear and tear" drving style, take it in and take your chances.

There was an article in either sport compact or Super Street I can't remember which, but it said that the stock flywheel does not dissapate the heat very well, which leads to premature clutch failure.

Of course i drive it hard but i know how to drive. the clutch just should be a better make.

Dubbleugly, that's standard on all the warranties. The point is that most of the clutches aren't defective, so they aren't covered, which is what I was referencing above. His car is already in the shop being taken apart. If they find an actual clutch defect, they will cover it under warranty. Usually, though, there are hot spots or excessive wear, which is a sign of abuse. You should have seen my PP and flywheel at 7500 miles - they were both mirrors.

Damn 2600! I sold my 03 blue evo at 24,500 miles, had about 20 launches, and no slippage with the clutch. Then again, I did not go past 5k rpm for 3,000 miles. Yes, that was excessive I know, but I didn't have any issues with the clutch or tranny!

I was in the same boat as Warrtalon but at about 8500miles, would have been 6500 but I did a road trip to southern cal and back, 2000 miles. It is an AWD car and with alot of drag starts either on street or track WILL result in a worn clutch. Get used to it or sell the car.

Oh ya, have you looked into a brake job? You'll complain about that also.

If your clutch goes out at under 10k, you either got a defective clutch, or you launch it at 5k at every green light you come to, period... I've driven nothing but sticks for twenty years, but this is the first AWD I've had, and it did take some getting used to - but after 25k miles and several dozen hard launches (the first several of which I screwed up and smelled clutch).... the stocker is still fine, with an intake and TBE as my only mods.

You can't drive a car into a brick wall and then claim it has a ****ty bumper.
