Apparently you don't know how to approach the dealer, because they figured out a way to keep you from driving the car.

I guarantee you the dealer wouldn't have fabricated a "$5000 deposit" story if they thought they could take you seriously. Fact is, your car is a ricer and your name is an abomination. I bet they heard your car before they saw you, and your fate was sealed before you opened your mouth.

If you truly do work a "lucrative coorporate [sic] job," surely it would be reflected by your taste in cars and your ability to convey seriousness in purchasing a performance vehicle such as the Lancer Evolution.

And if you truly are serious and not like the thousands of tire-kickers every Mitsubishi dealership gets a week, I suppose it was their loss.

If you are ready to buy the car, stroke a check for the $5000 they are asking for, drive it and buy it. The dealer is going to be as serious about selling you the car as you are about buying it. If you don't plan on putting the $5000 down during the buying process, I'm sure they will be happy to give the check back and have you pay for the car in a different way. You should be happy that they screen real buyers from the people that just want to tear the car a new *******. You wouldn't want to buy a car with a torn ******* would you?

man walk out of that dealership, when you go there and tell them you mean business that should be enough for them to let you test drive it. matter of fact, just to be a D*** about it bring yours to get serviced there. that will really make that one guy happy

Has anyone else experienced this with test driving driving these cars... a deposit?

by the way this will be my third new car and i have never paid any deposits in all the test drives that i went to....
They are exagerating, the only way they could possibly ask for that kind of money is if you are not solvent, your income is low and your credit is low.

Normally, the dealers are trying to filter the real customers from the time wasters so they are just telling you that so that perhaps they can see signs of seriousness or bull$hit.

Give then a second chance. They think you just want the ride. If you are really interested you should be able to just fill up the application/trade in form and they should handle you the keys for a ride

well here in louisiana, and in texas the policy is pretty much the same. you drive the car when you buy it lol i bought my IX MR without ever having driven it. i knew i what i was getting myself into though. EVO's sell themselves, test drive really isn't needed. around here there aren't very many, so they are like a specialty thing. i see it's A LOT different especially in cali.

When I bought my first evo Black 03 It was within the first month of the EVO's hitting American lots and the dealership was very "on edge" about people looking at and wanting to drive them.I understood when they said deposit first. However when time came for my new one (05 MR) and a different dealership. I had no probs getting a test drive and that was there first and only MR they had or would have.
I think a good deal of what urBan is saying is true about presentation, but then again the evo has been around so long dealerships are normally going to let someone drive it. I have always found that when you act as if your really don't need "there" cars or quotes and that your a man *or woman that shops and knows a thing or two you will put out the signal, "Hey I don't have to shop here, there are tons of dealerships that want my business" Then most sale guys grobble.
I am by no means saying you didn't present yourself correctly, but more so leaning in the idea of the dealership being dick heads.

Take your time and money and shop eleswhere
