Angry Bad Clutch after only 2108mi? Hope Not!

Hey guys. 36 days ago I purchased a brand new 2006 Mitsu EVO IX MR from a local dealership in my area. It had about 40 miles on it or so.

Fast-forward to today, my EXO IX has 2018 miles on it and I THINK that my clutch is slipping. Now I have never had a clutch slip on me before so I am not 100% sure that is what is indeed happening, but from all that I have read and heard it seems likely.

Lets say that I am cruising at 4500RPM then I hit the gas. The car will rev up to about 65000RPM and then I will feel the clutch kick in and it will drop down to about 5000RPM. This happens in every single gear and every time I do more then just barely touch the gas. It sounds and feels like I am just hitting the gas and keeping the clutch depressed and then I let go of the clutch. I assume that I am correct in assuming that my clutch is slipping?

Also before anyone says it, YES I KNOW how to drive a stick, I have never even owned an automatic vehicle before. So try to refrain from telling me that my inexperience with a clutch is what killed it. Thanks. Also, NO I have NOT tracked it yet or rallied it or anything along those lines. Thanks.

Anyway, I suppose my main question is this. I KNOW that the bumper to bumper warranty for mitsu does not and will NOT cover a clutch or flywheel. But I know that many manufacturers have a 3000mile warranty on that kind of stuff. I was wondering if mitsu was one of these manufacturers? I just find it VERY hard to swallow that for almost 40k the damn stock clutch wont last more than 36 days and 2000miles. Even if mitsu is not one of the above stated manufactures that have a 3000mile warranty on the items, what do you think the chances of the dealership replacing the clutch for me anyway? You know, as a defective item?

Also please refrain from telling me that I should go buy an aftermarket one. I am well aware of the benefits of one, but I dont want to replace the stock one with one for 2 reasons. One being the principle of a almost $40k car not lasting more than 2000 miles and the other being that I dont have to upfront cash capital for the one that I would really buy if I was going to replace the clutch with an aftermarket one.

If you guys could be of assistance I would GREATLY appreciate it. I am really just hoping that mitsu has like a 3000 mile warranty and I can get it replaced by them. Especially since it has not been tracked or auto-xed or anything like that. Or if they dont have a manufacturer one I am hoping I can convince the dealership to replace it for me anyway. Thanks a lot guys!

Well, the only thing I can tell you is find a warranty friendly dealer in Atlanta and try them. THey may say if they see blue-ing on the flywheel you were abusing the car. Good luck.

I put an aftermarket clutch on my MR at 3,000 miles, so if you need a new disk and pressure plate I can sell you mine.

How many times have you launched it? I would take the car back and bring one of the Mitsu techs out for a drive. Your car did have 40 miles on it when you picked it up. I tend to stay away from those vehicles because you never know.

My friends clutch acted the same way when it died, revving high (5250) and then catching at about (4250) so in all likelihood it is your clutch. As far as the warranty, I wouldnt know the answer, but knowing Mitsu, probably not covered at all. We replaced his with an aftermarket that he purchased himself and I installed myself and then had Mitsu bleed the ACD (a requirement for 05's and up)and he is very pleased.

I'm at the same mileage on my IX in which I learned how to drive on it and I have no problems. Have you launched? Because I haven't.

What you need to do it take it to the dealership and authorize them to tear it down and inspect it. If they see signs of hot spots on the flywheel, a burnt up pressure plate, or any other signs of misuse or abuse they will not cover it under warranty. If they find no signs of misuse or abuse, it should be covered under warranty. If you launched the car and you know you may of caused it, don't even bother to try to get it covered under warranty.

If they come to the conclusion that is was your fault, you will have to pay for the time it took them to tear it down. If it is covered under warranty, there should be no cost to you.

Don't walk in there with an attitude, explain your situation, and make sure you take it to a reputable dealership!

Hope this helps!

40 miles when you got it seems little high? could you argue someone at dealership beat up the clutch before you got it?

They will probably.. cover it because it hasn't passed the 12k mile mark. I think as long as your car is stock. Just be sure to take it to friendly dealership.

In most cases, people won't admit but they did indeed have something to do with it. It is only common because you only hear from the people that blew their clutch. There are a lot of EVO drivers out there that have had no problems.

Very true, and most of them probably did no launching or were pretty good at doing it right.

I had to change mine at 10,000. I'm glad I didn't have the dealer do it because they don't resurface the flywheel. As it turns out the stock flywheel doesn't disapate heat well and therefore warps. If I had had the dealer do it my new clutch would have just worn out again. Luckly I was planning on upgrading the clutch as long as WORKS was in there and just replaced the flywheel at the same time.

When I had my 03, I launched it several times, took it to the drag strip a number of times, and sold it with a little under 30K miles on the stock clutch. Still felt like it had another 30K miles on it.

With my 06 MR, I have 3K miles. I've launched it a number of times, after break in that is.

Then i would be safe to assume that you were doing it right.
