STI or EVO... with a twist

So i am in the middle of hunting down a new car. I was completely set on a IX rs and then yesterday i came across this ad
http://www.rs25.com/classifieds/show...&cat=12&page=2
What i am wondering is what you guys would do? I only have two choices, this car or an evo. My plans for either car is to turn it into a full on caged race car; rally mostly but with some definite track and auto/rally cross in there too. I dislike the new scooby shapes but i love the older body style such as this is. Plus it is much lighter than an evo IX could ever dream of being, which is nice. I will probably get flamed for this post, and i will get biased answers, etc. etc. But have at it and lets see what you all ahve to say.

Stock Evo that's reliable and a good platform to build on vs. someone else's project.

Evo 9

I would get the evo and start fresh, have something that no one has touched and build it like you want it.

Whichever makes you happier? Buying a car is an emotional decision. Both sides will tell you different and contradicting stories. In the end they are both great cars and the potential is hardly utilized.

I chose an Evo because I know a bit more about it then the Sti and have been exposed to it longer.

so far you have all hit on my number one concern.
someone else project versus my own and the whole new thing and reliability and all that fun stuff.
However, which car do you think would be more fun? Now that one gets me.
I think i may just have to take the trip to go check this car out just to answer that question. I tend to think the scooby would be more tossable than the evo because of the lighter weight and the shorter wheel base.

I have heard many people plan to build a caged full on race car, but fact is less than 1% actually do. That being said, if your serious about competition go with the Evo. It has much more potential and a much stiffer chassis.

If you want a car to build confidence with and polish your skills (no offense but you sound young), Id go with the Subie. Knowing its an engine swap, Im sure you will need to spend time working out little issues that rear their ugly head that come with the territory. The knowledge you gain can then be used to build up a race dedicated vehicle in the future.

its a beauty thats for sure. And already modded to boot. Hard decision. The biggest thing is how well maintained was it? Thats the only nice thing about new cars, well not the only nice thing, but an advantage.....you know what you did to it. Its why I dont buy used cars....I know what I did to it!

Get the Evo IX man. This car probably was beaten hard on and then it is already modded. Start out new with the mods U want to get on a car that has a very reliable engine and can handle a lot of power! Also, the IX looks better and probably has better handling. It's your choice though. Have fun choosing!

Not many people like to sell their perfectly running heavy modded cars. There is usually a mechanical or asthetic reason why they selling.

Hard choice but 22k is high for such a high mileage car, even though it has nice mods and not many miles (according to owner on new motor). He went to the track and turned low 12's? But never went back......hmmmmm no comment. It's a nice car, even to me, I'm pretty **** about buying cars, but I would still steer in the EVO direction, new and a virgin haha. Theres no pride in "purchasing" someone elses completed project.

In addition to what others have said, if you're planing on financing there is no way in hell you'll get approved for that amount for the Subie. To the eyes of a bank it's nothing more than an old RS worth maybe 10k at best.

And thats a lot of miles on the car, not to mention the type of car it is, god knows how many times it has been hammered on in that time.
