To Buy A Beater Or Not...

Well I have settlement money that I'm suppose to receive pretty soon. I just don't know if I should save it or buy a used car to drive daily. Right now my evo is my daily car and I drive 80 miles total a day. I thought about saving that money and just let the miles go up on the evo and then use that money to do bigger things in the evo in the future, like getting a stroker kit. If I do wait and save that money I will probably have close to 8k-10k by next year. I just want to see what you guys think and some suggestions of what I should do.

I'm all about racking up the miles and enjoying the ride. I don't think its the kind of car that will appreciate over time and for all the money you're paying to have it, enjoy it. You only live once. At least you won't look back and think "Jeez, I should have driven it more."

This statement is null and void if you are going into high crime areas where you may not find it when you walk outside. I know a lot of people that leave their cars at the airport or train stations a lot and buy a beater for that... that (to me) makes sense.

If its your dialy driver I would just save that money for maintenance, and I would keep it stock so no head aches. But thats just me do what you want its your money.

Well, I agree post #2! I have 113K on my EVO and I hate driving any other car even for one day! I love driving it and I drive 87 miles one way to work 5 days a week! Just keep up the maintainance and you'll be good to go!

as far as security wise, i have no problem. I live in a very secure neighborhood and its garage all the time. When I go to work and school it is also secured areas. The thing is I love driving the evo everyday. Im just not quite sure what to do at this point.

tough question... depends on if you mind putting miles on the Evo (and can afford it). I did some figuring because I had the same question. As much as I loved the Evo... the cost per mile to sit in traffic crawling to work... was not worth it in the Evo. I bought an old beater civic and drive it to work... It is perfect for sitting in traffic at 8:00 in the morning. I drive the Evo when it is sunny or on a Friday... and it makes the car that much more special (I drive about 65 miles a day). Also I financed the car for 6 years (only way to afford the payments)... If I drove it every day to work... it would be like 21,000 miles a year... PLUS fun driving... would be about 30,000 miles per year... times 6 years... would be like 180,000 before it was paid off.... OUCH. couldnt have that....

It is really a personal decision... I am love having the beater... it is also great when picking up stuff from home depot... or driving through salt covered roads.... going to big events where you have to park in a HUGE lot, leaving it at long term parking at the airport for a week at a time... There are ALOT more benefits to having a beater than just mileage.

So to make a long story short... I vote one for beater. Then again some people on here are rich enough to have the Evo as their "beater" (I am not one of them).

i bought a $200.00 beater that I use in the winter and will probably use in inclimate weather during the warm months. the savings on gas and insurance definately make it worth it.

is it possible to get a old civic that runs good for about 2k-3k? I used to have a honda and i just loved their reliability and mpg of gas.

Ram, just buy a beater Civic like I did. Then we can race at Firebird to see who's fart can is the loudest. lol j/k

Seriously though, I say get a beater. I save so much money on gas alone that it easily offsets the extra insurance and extra maintenance on a 2nd vehicle. Maintaining an Evo is expensive!!

Doug,I know we discussed this before but I just want to see what others think. If i could find an old civic for 3k I will probably do it. But you are definitely right the maintenance is expensive.

I like beaters too... however another thing to worry about is safety. God forbid you take a hit on the way to work, but if it were me I'd rather take the hit in an EVO (err, STi) before a '92 civic. Imagine situation where you'd kick yourself for never being able to drive again in a bizarre accident where the EVO would have made the difference you needed.

I am biased, however. One of the main factors of getting my car were the [poor] crash test performance stats on my old one.

Word.

Make sure you check Autotrader. When I was looking for my Civic in November I found a ton of EG Civics for around 3k. Speaking from personal experience, steer clear of modded ones.

I pay $87 a month for full coverage. But I got a $20 discount on the EVO insurance for <4,000 miles annually, so including that I pay an extra $67 a month.
