It helps tremendously in the sub 20mph impacts...the difference between just replacing your crashbar, bumper skin, & FMIC (which I had to do) or destroy your whole damn engine bay.
Plus if you insurance company finds out you removed it, your hosed.

There's a rumor that a JDM crash bar exists, but nobody seems to be able to source it. In any event it wouldn't be as beefy as the US version (we have very stringent safety and insurance regulations in this country), but it's better than nothing. Right now, I'm of the mind that if I can find the JDM crash bar (or a replacment), I'll go with that bumper.

Information on this has been spotty at best and contradictory at worst (just search on JDM IX bumper and read all the results).

So I'm just doing my homework now. Once the check comes in, I will want to get moving ASAP (JDM or USDM replacement . . .)
orbital performance has the JDM evo IX crash beam and bumper...check them out, they're selling the double din nav conversions too

the link in my sig sends you to a thread that was started by the owner, pm him for details

Talk to Cory at Atlantic Motorsports www.amstuning.com They have installed several of them and could tell you anything you need to know.

Without the U.S. standard crash bar I could see an insurance company choose not to give you the money to fix your car and if or someone hits you it could do some damage to the frame and now your screwed.

wait a min....we are talking about the rear bumper, why would you destroy your whole engine and FMIC if you get rear-ended

because theres the same beam in front, and people remove it, trying to save a few pounds on their daily commute.

I was even on the order list a while ago, but when i found out the beam had to be yanked, i cancelled my order. I track this car, and removing anything "safety" related for a cool bumper, is not even an option.

Well, it's all moot.

I've decided to just get a direct replacement. I like the JDM bumper and all, but it's not a show car for me, and one of the reasons I got an evo instead of a 2 seater was practicality for family. No kids yet, but once they arrive (and I am NOT selling the Evo then ), safety will be first.

Thanks though for all the help. Maybe a future gen Evo will have the better looking bumpers and a low-profile crash beam.

Do you have any type of source to back up this statement? That is a pretty dangerous statement to go spewing around the boards.

Of course the crash bar helps in accidents above 5-10 mph! It is always better to have more metal between the object and you. The crash bar is the first part of the crumple zone designed into the Evo. If you get rid of it then the FMIC, radiator, and engine will have to absorb most of the impact from a front end collision instead of the frame. This is not something you want since that is not what they are designed to do.

People have to stop thinking the crash bar only works at 5-10mph crashes.

So you are taking the word of some vendor trying to sell JDM bumpers over the NHTSA and the engineers down at Mitsubishi who thought it was a good idea to put the crash beam on there? Give me a break.
